Look at some of the offerings on the television networks Sunday (all times Eastern Standard): Psychoanalysts are forever Interviewing people, so it should be informative and entertaining to hear an outstanding analyst, Dr. Karl Menninger, being the- subject of an interview for a change: On "Wisdom" over NBC Sunday at 2 p.m. At 3:30 on CBS Sen. Then more NBC money was poured into imported "gun slingers" guest stars a the network's high-riding "Wagon Train." Stars like Debra Paget were slipped into Cimarron City for one-night stands in hopes of knocking off the competition. ALL THE WHILE, there was trouble with sponsors over in Madison Avenue Gulch. There was no sponsor at all for several weeks, then NBC decided on a share-the-ride plan for the expensive show (reportedly a week.) Four rotating sponsors, some buying only spot announcements, helped NBC for a while. Then Audrey Totter, who saw the handwriting on the wall, bowed out of the show. George Montgomery was as unhappy as some of the show's sponsors and finally the word came down from NBC to find a plot on Boot Hill and to bury "Cimarron City" with suitable honors.

Money, not bullets, had filled the backstage air but NBC was tired of reloading. Over at CBS they are shaking hands all around about how NBC couldn't gun down Richard Boone or shake the limp out of Chester on "Gunsmoke," and it will be remembered as an epic western story of its own. By LRSKINE JOHNSON (NEA Staff Correspondent) HOLLYWOOD There's a new headstone on Boot Hill. It reads: "Cimarron City" "Gunned Down in a '59 Western Feud." Yes, "Cimarron City" tried i but failed. It we TVs best western shoot-out this season and it wasn't even on television, you know. It had, as a matter of fact, nothing to do with a dusty street, a camera crew, a couple of cowpokes who had read the script and two pistols firing blanks on cue.

It was a behind-the-scenes shoot out and on the level. It was NBC buckshot and I do mean money against CBS bullets. CBS won with "Have Gun, Will Travel" and NBC lost with "Cimarron City" and it's still the talk of the Hollywood and New York watering holes where men in cashmere talk about, men in buckskin. It is a subject for talk because of all the money NBC poured into "Cimarron City," which will fade from Uie air this summer. The behind-the- scenes story of one TV western struggling to capture the4 audience of another is rather fascinatingand the plot, to be sure, is better than, those you see on TV every" night THE STALKING STARTED last September when NBC dreamed up the one-hour "Cimarron City" to shoot it out with CBS TV's two guns the half-hour "Have Gun" and the top-rated "Gunsmoke," in most sections of the country.

Maybe the show couldn't out-draw Mr. DILL-on Friends but NBC figured there might be a chance against Richard Boone's "Have Gun:" Until the other day, it was a touch-and-go affair. "Cimarron City" was launched with an audience rating of nine and finally worked up to 19 to Boone's 29. Then the rating dropped to 14, went even lower and the word came to Dodge City that "'Cimarron City' has the jitters." BUT NBC STILL HAD plenty of buckshot and the network continued to pour big money into the show. There were director and writer charges, cast changes and even a change" in format.

The roles of young John Smith and Audrey Totter were increased in size and the mayor of the town, George Montgomery, became a wanderer instead of a stay-at-home. After the 16th show, Deputy Smith was promoted to sheriff.
