"We're happy to get the championship back," said Dallas Coach Tom Landry. It's the 12th time the Cowboys have won the crown.

Dolphins 17, Chiefs 7: Touchdowns by Tony Nathan and Andra Franklin, and Uwe von Schamann's 39-yard field goal lifted the Dolphins to 104-1. Kansas City, 8-7, losing for the third straight week and the fifth time in seven games, was eliminated from the playoff race. Bills 19, Patriots 10: Joe Cribbs caught a scoring pass from Joe Ferguson and rushed for 153 yards to increase his season total to 1,003 mark for Buffalo. Roosevelt Leaks also scored a TD for the Bills, 10-5, and defensive end Ben Williams tackled Pats quarterback Matt Cavanaugh in the end zone for a safety. Broncos 23, Seahawks 1 3: The Bronocs stayed a game in front of San Diego in the AFC West as Craig Morton threw for one touchdown and Rick Parros ran for another.

Denver, 10-5, won for the eighth time at home this season without a loss. Seattle is 5-10. with an 8-7 record and giving it a wispy hope of getting into the playoffs. "I felt that our defense set the pace. They turned the ball over to us in good field position," he said.

"At least three times, it seemed like we were getting the ball at the 30-35 yard line." THE DEFENSE also bottled up Saints' running back George Rogers with 70 yards and one touchdown, leaving him 38 yards shy of the rookie rushing record of 1,605 set by Ottis Anderson of St. Louis three seasons ago. Two of Packer quarterback Lynn Dickey's touchdown passes went to wide receiver John Jefferson, a 24-yard toss in the first quarter and a 30-yarder in the fourth quarter. Running back Gerry Ellis got a 9-yard scoring toss in the first quarter. The Packers' other wide receiver, James Lofton, scored on a 25-yard Dickey pass in the second quarter, and tight end Paul Coffman was all alone in the end zone for a 2-yard touchdown pass- NEW ORLEANS (AP) No matter how things work out over the next seven days, the Green Bay Packers have proven one thing during the past two months, said free safety Maurice Harvey.

"We were 2-6 earlier in the year, and we knew we were better than that," he said after his team's 35-7 romp over New Orleans on Sunday. "We're not losers." Green Bay has won six of its last seven National Football League games, putting it into a three-way tie for the lead in the NFC Central Chargers Concluded from Page 1 for the kick goes on along the sidelines." WHEN HE GOT on the field, he said, he shut out everything else. "I couldn't even tell you if it was a good snap or bad, or how the hold was," Benirschke said. "All I know is I hit it solid. I kicked the ball, kicked it firm and it hooked in The -season was over if I missed that kick." An interception by linebacker Woodrow Lowe, who scooped up a Doug Williams pass as it bounced off the hands of tight end Jimmie Giles, set up the winning 60-yard drive.

THE VICTORY boosted the Chargers to 9-6 and left the defending champs of the AFC West in playoff contention. "We're averaging over 300 yards passing a game. We're supposed to do this. This is nothing unusual," said Fouts, who completed 33 of 49 passes for 351 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions. "A team rarely stops us.

We stop ourselves." Benirschke couldn't help but think of his Tampa counterpart, Bill Ca-pece, after he missed a crucial con Notional Football league At A Glance By The Associated Press All Times EST American Conference Eastern Division breaking procedure playoff teams for the Division Two 1. He said he dived in from the right, trying to block the ball, and Capece hooked it wide to the left.

"I intimidated Capece enough that I thought I would have blocked it if it was straight," he said. San Diego scored on a 27-yard pass from Fouts to rookie tight end Eric Sievers and an 8-yard run by fullback John Cappelletti before the half, then added a 1-yard TD plunge by running back John Brooks and Benirschke's field goal. FOUTS CONNECTED with wide receiver Wes Chandler eight times for 112 yards and with wide receiver Charlie Joiner on seven tosses for 99, and he hit tight end Kellen Wins-low eight times for another 55 yards. The Bucs scored on a 58-yard pass from Williams to wide receiver Theo Bell and Capece's 49 yard field goal and trailed 21-10 midway through the final period. Then Tampa came to life, grabbing a 23-21 lead on two touchdown bursts by rookie James Wilder of 8 and 23 yards just 27 seconds apart.

By The Associated Press It's five down, five to go in the race for the National Football League playoffs, and it could go right down to the final game of the regular season before the field is completed. Eleven clubs are still in contention for the five berths remaining after the weekend's games, in which two teams clinched division titles and two others assured themselves of at least wild-card spots. THINGS ARE so tight that only one of the 13 games played Saturday Sunday Chicago's 23-6 victory over Oakland had no bearing whatsoever on the postseason picture. Bengals 17, Steelers 10: The victory gave the Bengals their first division title in eight years and eliminated the Steelers, 8-7, from the playoffs for the second year in a row. Ken Anderson passed for two touchdowns, and the Bengals' fense intercepted Pittsburgh quarterback Mark Malone twice.

But the intensity and bruising contact that has marked the Lions-Vikings rivalry was familiar, at least to Minnesota Coach Bud Grant. "LOOK AT THESE guys," Grant said, appraising the damage after the game. "They're all beat up, they just got beat by a better football club. It's like being in the ring. You're being knocked out, but you're in there fighting for your life.

You take a beating." The only time Detroit had dealt so much dirt to Minnesota was on another December Saturday in 1978. The Lions won 45-14 as Gary Daniel-son hit Leonard Thompson for three touchdowns. This year Thompson settled for two. "Anytime I can beat Minnesota, that makes it special," Thompson said. "I equate them with excellence.

To be a good team, you've got to beat the good teams." To prove they merit that description and earn their first -playoff berth since 1970, the Lions couldn't ask for a truer test than Tampa Bay. Bears find OAKLAND (AP) The Chicago Bears had been long since eliminated from the National Football League playoffs, but you'd never have guessed from the way they handled the Oakland Raiders. "This was the best game we played all year," Coach Neill Armstrong said after the Bears posted a 23-6 victory Sunday behind three Vince Evans touchdown passes. While the Bears improved their record to 5-10, the defending Super Bowl champion Raiders fell to 7-8. It didn't much matter, since they had been knocked from playoff contention on Saturday by a New York Jets' victory over Cleveland.

OAKLAND COACH Tom Flores said he didn't think the playoff elimination affected his team, but he admitted that "we didn't get much emotion or much intensity." Armstrong said the key to the victory was that the Bears finally gave Evans ample time to throw. Thus protected, he fired a 42-yard scoring pass to Rickey Watts in the first quarter, then hit Watts and rookie Ken Margerum for touchdowns within the space of a minute and a half in the third quarter to ice the win. "I was especially pumped up for this game," said Evans, who had tossed just six touchdown passes previously this season. "I took a lot of criticism this year, people saying I couldn't do it. I showed that I can oottball scoreboard Jets 14, Browns 13: The Jets, 9-5-1, aiming for their first playoff appearance in 12 years, got a two-touchdown-pass game from quarterback Richard Todd.

Quarterback Brian Sipe rallied the Browns, 5-10, in the second half with a TD pass to Calvin Hill. The Jets victory eliminated the defending Super Bowl-champion Raiders from the playoff field. Giants 20, Cardinals 10: Defensive end George Martin's 20- -yard touchdown return with a re- 7 covered fumble keyed the victory for the Giants, 8-7, who eliminated the Cardinals, 7-8. The Giants sacked rookie quarterback Neil Lomax three times. Redskins 38, Colts 14: Joe Theisman passed for two touch-downs and ran for a third to lead Washington, 7-8.

Bert Jones TD passes to Ray Butler and Reese McCall for Baltimore, 1-14. 49ers 28, Oilers 6: San Francisco, 12-3 and striving for the home-field advantage in the playoffs, blew out the Oilers, 6-9, with a 21-point third quarter, including a touchdown pass by Joe Montana. Earl Campbell scored for Houston. chance Lions' Coach Monte Clark is elated after the first half of a great weekend. time to win do it if I nave time." WATTS AGREED.

"Vince has had to rush his passes," he said. "Today he had time and he showed what he can do." The Bears won despite injuries to their main running backs. Fullback Matt Suhey was sidelined early with bruised ribs, and star halfback Walter Payton was hobbled by a lingering thigh injury. Together they accounted for 46 yards. While the Bears' offense protected Evans, the defense made life miserable for Oakland quarterback Marc Wilson, sacking him five times.

When Wilson jammed his thumb in the fourth quarter and left the game, the Bears kept the blitz on against backup Jim Plunkett and sacked him once. "WE FELT WE couldn't go with just a four-man rush, so we blitzed a lot, and it worked," said Armstrong. Wilson, who matched Evans with 240 yards passing, threw a touchdown pass to Bob Chandler late in the first quarter to bring the Raiders to within a point at 7-6. But from then on his day went downhill, ending with a safety when he was gang-tackled in the Oakland end zone. "Nobody plays defense like they do," Wilson said of Chicago's alignments.

"They can have a five-man line and five defensive backs at the same time. They cause problems for everybody. We're not the only ones." sion appearance will give an opportunity to erase some of the disappointment of the season," said Bennett. "WE'RE STILL ALIVE and have played some very good football during the past three weeks. Now we'll just have to see what happens.

"Obviously this season has been frustrating because of the closeness of so many defeats," the Falcons' -coach added, "but dwelling on the past does us no good whatsoever." Rams' Coach Ray Malavasi isn't dwelling on the past, either. He's mostly looking ahead to 1982. "Everytime I've stepped onto the field in my life I've wanted to win," said Malavasi. "Our guys would like to finish up the season that way and give us something to carry over to next year." THE RAMS WILL close out the season next Sunday against Washington in Anaheim, and the Falcons will face the Bengals in Atlanta. Los Angeles' Dan Pastorini will start at quarterback against Atlanta since Pat Haden is out with a knee injury.

The Lions still could go as a wildcard team if the Giants lose to Dallas, Green Bay loses to the Jets and Atlanta loses its last two games. 3. If Tampa Bay and the Lions he, a Green Bay victory will give the Packers the Central Division title.

Tampa Bay could go to me playoffs as wildcard team under the same circumstances as No. 1 above. 4. If Tampa Bay and the Lions tie, and Green Bay loses, Tampa Bay will tie with me Lions for the division title, but Tampa Bay will go to the playoffs on a superior conference won-lost record. The Lions could go to the playoffs as a wild-card team under the same circumstances as No.

A loss tonight would not necessarily eliminate Atlanta. 1 THE RAMS, 5-9 and out of the playoffs for the first time in nine years, will be attempting to snap a five-game losing streak in the nationally televised game.
