Morning Journal Horse helps Jo DeWinter on her way to acting career as Jennifer Jones" but she fell in love with an Air of "Name of the Game," and then she did a pilot with Sally Struthers. It was called "Me on the Radio," and it didn't sell. Jo's big acting break was when she created the character of the deaf girl's mother in "Children of a Lesser God Force officer and married him." For 18 years, she was his wife as he became a diplomat. She did no acting, except for two forgettable films she did while they were stationed in Rome. They served in Rome, Paris, London and, finally, in Washington for six years.

"When my husband retired," she says, "I steered him to Southern California. And that's when I decided to begin my career." She was in her 30s, and so it was slow going. But she persevered. The first was when a horse named Hurry Home Harry won at big odds.

The second was when a U.S. diplomat retired. It all helped, and you will learn why in a moment. First, though, we must meet Jo DeWinter today. She is a tall and regally elegant lady, and you see her virtually every week on CBS' "Gloria," the show that stars Sally Stmthers.

Miss DeWinter plays the part of Dr. Maggie Lawrence on the show. But she might never have been an actress at all, let-alone a cast member of a hit sitcom, had it not been for Hurry Home Harry and the diplomat. Jo DeWinter comes from New Orleans, where she entered The world with the unwieldy name of Juanita Maria-Johana Daussat Adamina. She has, however, always been Jo to her family and friends.

And, some years later.iwhen she started her career, she borrowed her aunt's name De l'Hiver and anglicized it to DeWinter. r-Sbe thinks she always wanted to act, but for one reason or anothershe put it off. Her father, ostensibly a wealthy rice broker, actually spent more of his time following the race horses, as an owner and big plunger. "I spent a lot of time, as a girl," Jo says, "at tracks like Tanforan and Bay Meadows. When I was 6, I presented the trophy to the winner of a big handicap at Bay Meadows.

And I was dismayed when the winner took a bite out of the trophy a horseshoe of flowers." She was going' to. college, on a no-frills deal, when she plunged on Hurry Home Harry, a horse her father owned. He came in at big odds, which enabled her to have a more comfortable college career. And that allowed her to take some dramatics courses. -rDavid Selznick, noticed her in a college play "I think he liked -me because I had the same cheekbones YOUR LAWN A BREAK.
