Or perhaps the abysmal light conditions played tricks with the eyes. But it sure looked like the guys conducting the seminar on "How to throw the football and live to enjoy it" here Saturday were the Amazin' Blue, not the black and gold.

Michigan quarterback Jim Harbaugh definitely enjoyed it, as he has enjoyed no other game in his increasingly bright career. In barely more than a half of play, Harbaugh upstaged his highly publicized Purdue counterpart Jim Everett three touchdown passes to zip, and 233 yards to 96, making it easy for the Wolverines to clobber the baffled Boilermakers, 47-0. It was great theater while it lasted "Another opening, another show as Michigan State's football team took its third straight triumphant step along "The Great White Way." Spartan sophomore tailback Lorenzo White was as bright a star as any coach could ever direct in his team's 35-16 win over turnover-plagued Indiana here Saturday.

He rushed for an eye-popping 286 yards in just 25 carries and 30 minutes, 31 seconds of play barely apprearing after the intermission. White's third touchdown of the day and 14th of the season gave the 5-4 Spartans, now 3-3 in Big Ten play, a 35-3 lead after just two snaps of the third quarter. Understudies Craig Johnson and Kevin Bozeman took over from there, giving White a virtual vacation from his standard 38-carry See SPARTANS. Spartans posted a 35-1 6 victory. Sexton stops Trenton, 21-6 By BOB GROSS Lansing State Journal It was basic football after some not-so-basic mistakes that carried Sexton High's football team a step further in the Class A playoffs Saturday. Coach Gary Raffs Big Reds overcame a 6-0 first-half deficit with three touchdowns to hand Trenton's mission-bound Trojans a 21-6 loss in a pre-qualifying game played before 2,500 fans at Sexton's Memorial Stadium on a cold and rainy afternoon Sexton will take a 10-0 record into Saturday's regional at Jackson High against defending champion Ann Arbor Pioneer, which won its 22nd straight game Friday with a 33-20 playoff victory over Westland John Glenn.

"We really didn't do many things right in the first half," said Raff. "I told the kids at halftime we were only down six points and there was plenty of time but that we had to get back to the simple fundamentals of blocking and tackling. "The defense was playing well, and even when Trenton scored in the first quarter we had the guy trapped and a hand on him. But he broke a couple tackles and got in. The second half was much different, we back out and played like we can." Playing like the Big Rads can is an awesome assignment for any team to handle, and veteran Trenton Coach Jack Castignola feels it's going to take a good team to beat Sexton.

"Our kids played with a lot of heart but Sexton is an excellent club. With their combination of size, quickiness and strength, they'll be very difficult to beat," he said. "We controlled the first half but in the third quarter they came out, marched down the field and See SEXTON, Page 5C Mason ices win No. 450 Spartans rip -Michigan, 6-2 By WILL KOWALSKI Lansing State Journal Because of the large number of young players on year's squad, it's not fair to compare Michigan State's hockey team to last year's veteran unit that won a record 38 games. "I've been asked a dozen times, 'When are you going to get Johnson Perles said. "Even my closest friends and my wife wanted to know. Well, today, I didn't stick to my guns. I put him in, and I embarrassed the kid. I just told him to forget it, that those fumbles were my fault, not his." One other thing bothered Perles Saturday on a generally joyous day.

His team was called for two roughing-the-kicker penalties, and he didn't want his team to get that kind of reputation. He didn't want that image any more than that of a greedy record-seeker. The only record he wants is 12-0. That's not going to happen either at least, not yet White is already fifth in Big Ten single-season rushing and needs 23 carries and 230 yards to take both of Keith Byars' Big Ten marks. And if there's a running back at any level who has gained more yards after being hit behind the line of scrimmage, I'll buy him dinner.

But the best part about MSU's meal ticket is that he knows what records are temporary numbers and how meaningless they are in the "Perles Plan." "If I have a chance at the trophy or a record, that'd be nice," the soft-spoken tailback said. "But I have two more years at this university. A lot of things will happen if we win." That may or may not include a better shot at the record than White had here. But the indisputable fact is that MSU's shot at a post-season plum would fade significantly if their star went down. His replacement may not be ready yet, as Perles painfully learned.

Craig Johnson has loads of ability, but he's still wearing a small rubber cast on his broken hand. He "We're not here to promote offense, defense, special teams, players or coaches. Michigan State's football program may be more underrated than understood these days, but everyone should realize one fact Its head coach, George Julius Perles, hasn't changed his overriding philosophy since day one with the Spartans. If you accept that, the question of an NCAA single-game rushing record for Lorenzo White against Indiana Saturday is ridiculous. On this day, 286 yards were quite enough. Sure, White probably could have broken Rueben Mayes year-old mark of 357 yards by the end of the third quarter. The Hoo-siers had a better chance of stopping the onset of winter than No.

Ignoring a rare chance for reserves' game-experience? Rubbing Indiana's noses in its ineptitude? This is Michigan State, not Iowa. What would Hayden Fry have done in that situaL tion with Ronnie Harmon? Right! "Rueben who?" There isn't going to be any push for rushing records or a glossy Heisman Trophy campaign in East Lansing though you probably know who'd get one coach's vote.
