Delta Emerges Hearty Crop Abounds On Acres Of Heavy Delta Clay By HARRY MARSH DD-T Special Correspondent The Delta area of Mississippi is one of the world's newest rice producing areas. This 5,000 year old crop, which supplies fhe major food requirements for more than one-half of (he world's population, was established in Mississippi just after World War II on 300 acres of land near Greenville and by 1954 had increased to 77,000 acres. Acreage restrictions were established that year and now the Mississippi crop is grown on about 45,000 acres. Flooding Controls Weeds Most weeds can be controlled by flooding or application or herbicides, usually by airplane.

Rice usually is planted on the same field for about three years, then rotated to soybeans or pasture or fallowed. In fields where rice has been grown several years grass becomes a problem.
