Our plan appears to be working." It certainly worked against the bewildered Badgers, who were outgained 394-182. Coach Dave McCain's club had beaten OSU 12-7 on the road last wound up eighth in the conference with a 2-6 mark and finished 5-6 overall a disappointing departure from four seven-win seasons in a row. "We weren't ready to play, and they dominated us in every phase," McClain said of the year's most-lospsided loss. "It's amazing how much emotions mean in a football game. We were tentative in all aspects of the game.

The second half was worse than the first. We just fell apart." More accurately, they were taken apart by MSU's outstanding play up front on both sides of the football. It was a perfect All American Bowl sendoff for the 7-4 Spartans, 'who will meet 7-2-1 Georgia Tech on New Year's Eve in Birmingham, Ala. Five straight wins lifted MSU to a fourth-place Big Ten tie with 5-3 Ohio State and produced the school's best regular-season finish since 1978. "Two years ago when I stood here, we'd just been beaten 32-0," said Coach George Perles, recalling a painful first-year experience. "Now, we're 7-4, with a chance to go 8-4. In my opinion, we're right on the money.

Page 3C Jrf 'V Faces Nebraska at Fiesta By DAVE MATTHEWS Lansing State Journal ANN ARBOR Mission accomplished. Well, almost accomplished. That 12-10 loss at Iowa on a field goal with 0:00 showing on the clock still rankles Michigan.

So does the 3-3 tie at Illinois. But they are both no more than minor bruises on the Wolverines' ego after a more-convincing-than-it-sounds 27-17 licking of Ohio State here Saturday before 106,102 fans. Nothing does quite so much for Michigan's self-image as a thorough licking of the Buckeyes. "YES," responded head Wolverine Bo Schembechler, speaking in capital letters for emphasis, when asked if beating Ohio State was better than winning a bowl game. "Why wouldn't I say that? Have you checked my bowl record lately?" he added, chuckling about his mysteriously poor (2-8) post-season mark.

Schembechler was in a mood to chuckle about almost anything. Whether he'll be chuckling after his next postseason appearance remains to be seen. Michigan, 9-1-1 and likely to finish among the regular-season top five in the polls, officially accepted a bid to the Fiesta Bowl in the wake of Saturday's triumph. Nebraska, 9-2 and considered by many the nation's best until Saturday's 27-7 disappointment at Oklahoma, will supply angry opposition. Ohio State, 8-3, in line for the Cotton Bowl if it beat Michigan, must settle for a Florida Citrus Bowl engagement with defending National Champion Brigham Young, 9-2.

The Fiesta gets not only two top 10 teams for its Jan. 1 afternoon spectacular, but something unique in Michigan's modern bowl history Air Schembechler. Or, to pin the Wolverines' suddenly-sensational passing game to its actual source, Air Harbaugh. Jim Harbaugh, son of Western Michigan Coach Jack Harbaugh, continued to perform more like the offspring of Johnny Unitas, Sammy Baugh or Otto Graham. He became the probable national champion in passing efficiency by riddling the Buckeyes for 16 completions in 19 attempts worth 230 yards and all three Wolverine touchdowns.

It's an unbelievable feeling to win this game," he said.

"It was a very special day for the whole offense. The two games we lost (he lumps the 3-3 tie at Illinois in the loss category), the offense didn't get the job done. Lansing Catholic 44 lot) Haslett46.Bath36 Nothing is a cinch for this team, except that it's going to get better. "When we came to the program, it'd won two games," Perles said, citing the familiar "two-step" improvement pattern. "Our first year, we won four and tied one. Last year, we won six. And this year, we've won seven, with a chance at eight "We still need another good recruiting class.

This class will be the most important It'll be the difference between having a real, real good football team here in our fifth year." Hey, George, what about the fourth year? You can talk about it without bloating your ballplayers' heads. After all, they read predictions last spring that they were supposed to win eight games. Those reports didn't cause cancer or Soviet espionage. They only caused brief blushing for some bearded guy who thought he'd jumped the gun. Still, that's always better than jumping on the bandwagon.

Something like the longest winning streak of any Big Ten school, for starters. And who outside of "Fantasyland" would ever have believed five weeks ago that the Spartans could finish with the same conference mark as Ohio State? The answer is obvious Perles and his players. "We have our own style," Perles said of a much-maligned offensive approach.

"When someone says, 'What is Michigan State our offense is to really come off the football. That way, we should be consistent in rain, snow, mud or whatever. "Our players call it 'Pound, Green, We run the ball and throw our flood patterns. Then, we get teams in one-on-one situations, and there's no doubt the Ingram and (Andre) Rison have the capability to beat people." So does this team, after its offensive line began to mature. Can it beat Georgia Tech on New Year's Eve? Yes, but MSU had the potential to beat Army a year ago, too.

MADISON, Wis. It was another fairytale day for Michigan State's Lorenzo "Snow" White, but no one is calling his blockers "The Seven Dwarfs" these days. In fact it you're looking for "Sleepy" here Saturday, contact Wisconsin's off-duty offense. "Dopey" was a Badger punt returner, who turned a 61-yard sliding punt into a turnover and a fast Spartan touchdown. And "Bashful" was playing in the hosts' secondary, trying to cover Mark Ingram.

"Grumpy" was coaching the red-and-white, passing out blame but not much credit "Doc" was a delighted spectator, as the injury-free Spartans escaped from Wisconsin. "Sneezy" was somewhere among the 56.854 shivering souls in Camp Randall Stadium. And "Happy" was an MSU booster wearing an All American Bowl blazer. But it doesn't take the imagination of Disney to see what happened in the Spartans 41-7 romp. The Badgers of last week forgot to show up, while MSU showed precisely how it's done.

"Their win over Ohio State opened our eyes a little bit" said middle linebacker Shane Bullough. "But we haven't felt this good about ourselves at any time since Coach Perles got here. We feel that right now we're as good as any team we've played this season." That includes two teams among the nation's top five, Big Ten champion Iowa and distinguished runner-up Michigan. It's not much consolation right now, but it won't hurt anyone's confidence next year. "I'm very satisfied with our progress," said a somewhat-vindicated Coach George Perles, the state's most-famous non-union bricklayer, after his team finished its "sec.
