Living Entertainment 2D LANSING STATE JOURNAL Thursday, Feb. 28, 1985 Sdamidlav irecepooims Galleries plan Primitivism traced in Detroit art show v-Vv iif i By THOMAS OUOYSZ Primitivism has come to Detroit. More specifically, "Primitivism in 20th Century Art: Affinity of the Tribal and the Modem," opened "Wednesday at The Detroit Institute of Arts. This is one of only two stops for the exhibit after its debut at New York's Museum of Modern Art. THE EXHIBIT seeks to clearly show the link between modem work and the tribal arts of Africa, the Americas and Oceania.

Works "Affinities" section searches for the common denominators in both forms. The result is a tour de force art-history lesson. "PRIMITIVISM" ALSO offers the rare chance to view one of Picasso's most famous and important paintings, "Les Demoiselles d'Avigon," a cornerstone in modem art The show will continue through May 19. The Institute itself is free, but this exhibit has an admission charge of $3.75, $2.25 for seniors and students with ID. Tickets will be sold from 9:30 a.m.

to 4 p.m. every day except Monday, with the show staying open until 5:30. Between March 13 and May 2, there will also be special evening sessions (with tickets sold through 8 p.m.) on Wednesdays and Thursdays, with prices $1 higher. Umaas Gladys is a Michigan State University graduate writing tne-baee. Lby modem artists like Picasso, North Lansing's neighboring art galleries will be putting on simultaneous receptions Sunday.

In the process, they'll focus on two individual artists and a seven-person collective. The galleries are part of the arts renaissance of North Lansing. (Another example of the arts push is photographer Jane Rosemont, featured on Page ID.) Now all three will hold receptions from 1-5 p.m., to introduce shows that will continue throughout March. TWO DOORS DOWN, 1219 Turner, will feature Jim Lyman, an Okemos artist with southern roots. Lyman graduated from the University of Georgia in 1975, then picked up his Master of Fine Arts degree at Michigan State University in Now he has a studio at the Lansing Frame Shop, and he figures his work has been influenced by Lansings gloomy weather.

"My earlier work is characterized by its light and bright colors. Now my colors appear more subdued." THE 1984 GALLERY, 1217 Turner, will feature Bruce Thayer, who will also include a few. of his pieces in Lyman's show. Thayer graduated from Everett High and Central Michigan University, then got a master's degree at the Chicago Art Institute. He works at OldsmoDile and also creates graph prints at Studio Frame.

Meanwhile, the Tubued Art Studio is across the street from those two galleries. The seven artists at the studio will be showing their work and will be talking to visitors at their workplaces. In other art news: See GALLERIES, Page 3D Ktee, Brancusi and Gauguin are juxtaposed with tribal works. "Primitive sculpture has never been surpassed," Picasso declared. And in this show, we see the tribal influence is direct and startling.

A "concepts" section establishes the modem response to tribal art. A "history" one reviews the direct influence of tribal art on modern art, from Gauguin to the Abstract Expressionists of the 1950s. Dear Ann Landers: I hope I can 'put my problem in language you will be able to print because there must be a lot of people out there who need -help, as I do. I am 58 years old and have had six children.

I look like the picture of and actually I am not ill, but my problem has caused me a lot of embarrassment and has ruined many a social occasion. To put it bluntly, I wet my pants when I sneeze or cough unexpectedly or when I laugh a lot. Sometimes I feel -that awful dampness (or worse yet, trickling) for no reason at all. Last week my husband and I went to the theater with another couple. I had heard it was a hilarious play so I packed myself with a sizable wad of paper tissues.

I felt safe until I stood jip to leave. The tissue was soaked and so was the back of my dress. Luckily for me I had brought a light along, but I felt so humiliated and hoped no one noticed my stockings. The last time I saw my doctor was three years ago. The problem was so slight I mentioned it only casually.

Ie called it urinary incontinence, and said it is not uncommon and to come back if it got to be a real nuisance. I hate going to doctors, which is crazy, I know, but that's the way I am. Please advise me, Ann. If you say i should go to the doctor, I will, but what other help is there for people like me? Mrs. In Oak Park, 111.

Happily for you, it is in your area. More are on the drawing board. I am a great believer in self-help groups.

The emotional support of people who share a common problem beats any other kind of help that I know of. Get going. Dear Ann Landers: Whenever I visit the home of a friend or relative I never to look in the medicine cabinet and check the linen drawers as well. How about women who check out the closets? I always take a good look if I can manage to do it undetected.
