But, ultimately, he realized what he really wanted to do was to act. So he went back home to Washington and began working in little theaters in the area. He did that for three years, and supported himself while he learned, by working in the theater's office. Then he decided the time had come to go to New York. There he auditioned for a role in a production being given by the Negro Ensemble Company.

He got the part, in "A Soldier's Play," and he played a redneck, racist southerner. When the N.E.C. brought the production to Los Angeles, Smith came with it. He was doing the play here when he was spotted by a talent scout. "He came backstage," Smith says, "looking for 'that When they told him that 'that southerner' was actually a northerner, he was even more enthusiastic, because the part he was looking for someone to play was a northerner.

In fact, the part he was looking for was someone to play Robert Kennedy in "Blood Feud." He played Robert Kennedy in the recent Operation Prime Time production of "Blood Feud," with Robert Blake as Jimmy Hoffa, in this story of the vicious confrontation between those two men. Cotter Smith is new in town. And the story of how he came to be given this key role is worth telling. Smith's real name is Joseph Cotter Smith.

Cotter is his mother's maiden name. They called him Cotter when he was a boy, although he prefered just plain Joe. "I remember," he says, "when I was 6 or 7, I went with my father to his Princeton reunion. Everybody had name tags, and mine said "Cotter But I sneaked back to the name tag table and said they had made a mistake, that I was Joe Smith. So they gave me a new tag, with "Joe Smith' on it." The Smith family has a legal tradition.

Cotter's grandfather was a lawyer, his brother and sister are lawyers, and his father is Federal Court Justice John Lewis Smith. Cotter grew up in Washington, D.C., where his father is on the bench. "It was sort of assumed," he says, "that I would be a lawyer, too. But I just was never interested in that.
