THE STATE JOURNAL May 20, 1964 D-3 Lansing, Michigan Mrs. Richards Typical Of Modern Doctor's Wife Mrs. Frank D. Richards, who assumed presidency of the 200-plus-member auxiliary to the Ingham County Medical Society Tuesday, is typical of the doctor's wife of today. Husband and family have priority in her life, but she has smoothly worked in a record of quiet accomplishment in community projects.

After talking with Ruth Richards, you are certain she has discovered the secret way to stretch the day's 24 hours into many more. As wife of Dr. Frank Richards, a Lansing physician, she manages a he du led "un-scheduled" household. She is quick to tell you about their children: Betsy, Mrs. Richard Ortquist, who with 2-year-old Leslie Jean will soon be moving from Ann Arbor to Springfieid, Ohio, where her will teach at Wittenberg College; son Brent is married to the former Julie Powers of Lansing and is doing graduate work at the University of Florida at Tallahassee, and Suzanne is a sophomore at East Lansing High School.

Ruth's outside activities are the enlargement of family interests. She has a long and impressive record of service for 4-H Clubs, Brownies, Cub Scouts, Sunday school teaching and church choirs, Eastern Star, 17 years with the St. Lawrence Hospital Auxiliary where she has held a variety of executive offices and a similar record with the Medical Auxiliary. As incoming president of the Medical Auxiliary, Ruth hopes introduce the GEMS project to Lansing. The project (Good Emergency Mother Substitutes) is a highly organized Early Lansing History Subject of Zonta Talk "Michigan Week" was celebrated by the Zonta Club of Lansing at its Tuesday luncheon meeting in the Jack Tar Hotel.

Ford S. Ceasar, principal of the High Street School, discussed "History of His talk dated back to the very beginning of Lansing and Ingham County. Using a chartmap, he pointed out the areas of many of Lansing's first buildings, including the Seymour House, Lansing's first hotel. "In 1847," the speaker said, "this city was known as but that lasted only about 10 months. As some of the early settlers had come from Lansing, N.Y.

and had grown to love the name a petition was signed to the name changed in 1848." Near Holt, settled in 1837, was North Settlement, the speaker continued. He said its pioneers helped build a dam and mill in 1844 in what is now North Lansing. Richards makes a marvelous "office wife" Dr. Richards, when she sometimes fills in for his nurse-secretary. Mrs. Richards, a busy woman in every phase of her life, is new president of the Ingham County Medical Auxiliary. Medical Auxiliary Officers Installed Mrs.

Now in operation in other cities in Pennsylvania and Illinois, the program utilizes expert training by doctors, nurses, fire and police departments to educate qualified helpers. An artistic flair is evidenced in Ruth's hobby, interior decorating.

She is a whiz at starting from almost nothing, does the repairing, reupholstering, refinishing, and comes up with something of beauty. Her married children, too, call for services in this line. She even puts the frosting on the cake with a professional touch, though Ruth admits that with the new slim diets, she can't do as much as she once did. Typical in every way of Ruth's life, she does a bit more than is expected in everything. As a doctor's wife she naturally runs a telephone answering service and emergency first aid station but she is also competent to take over in Dr.

Richards' office so that the regular nurse-secretary may have a long weekend. There is a time for studyserious study of the American Indians, and field trips to further the study. And still more time for an occasional golf game, attend professional baseball and football games, too. The Richardses live at 311 Kensington. East Lansing.
