Ever, novices soon learn to glide on one ski, but few attain form of Shirley MacCollo, Dixie trick skiing champion . say, when you tackle water skiing o So, water skiing is coming of age. It's estimated that there are already 100,000 water skiers, according-to Charles'R. Sligh, of Grand Rapids, Mich., president of the American Water Ski Association. This group, formed in 1939, lays down rules and regulations, and runs water skiing tourneys. Water skiers compete in regional meets, and local events. Big meets still to come this year are^the National Open, at Lake Placid-N.Y., starting next "Friday; and the North American Open in Toronto August 30-Sept. 1. Both feature trick skiing, jumping and slalom events, for men and women. It's a French Invention npHi SPORT was invented in 1929 when thrill-seeking A young French Army officers tried "skijoring" behind a motorboat. It caught on fast at French resorts, and quickly spread to the U.S. , First Americans said to have tried it were Dick and Malcolm Pope, whose Cypress Gardens resort at Winter Haven, Fla., remains the publicity capital of the sport. Today, however, California has the largest number of water skiers, according to the AWSA. Runners-up are New York, Michigan and Washington. · The first U.SJ national tournament was held in 1939, and the first world competition at Geneva in 1948. · Young as it is, the sport already'has its zany contests. One of them is the water marathon raced annually over a 52-mile round-trip course from Redondo Beach, Calif., to Catalina Island. · And at the other end of the scale is an elaborate "race" at Chico, Calif., where skiers are towed from a jeep.
