ThtMfrMiri.**. ****, Wontvw. fcMdw. fvcc facts by jack uhde This week is the last week of classes at FVCC for this school year. In looking for a way to quickly review the year I decided the best approach is to take a look at one special event which was held last Thursday for the purpose of recapping the entire year: the Annual Awards Banquet. Instead of the traditional formal dinner, this year we combined the awards ceremonies with the year-end picnic and gathered at the Lions' Camp on Bitterroot Lake. After poring through food lines several times everyone trooped into the lodge for the awards ceremonies -- to recognize outstanding students, athletes, and friends of the college. Selected as male and female athletes of the year were Steve Slater and Lorna Griffin. Both Steve and Lorna maintained an excellent grade-point average as well as putting maximum efforts into their chosen athletic fields; and both amassed quite a record by the end of the year. Faculty athlete of the year was Bob Zahrobsky. As well as serving as captain of the intramural champions (the Has Beens,) "Z" is active in the college drama department and still manages to be a full-time college instructor. The MOD program, a federal project for slightly handicapped students, presented awards to outstanding athletes. MOD is operated by Jim Corbitt and Ann Sasich. It is also one of the college programs which will be terminated because of financial difficulties. The 'Hustler' Award was designed to honor a community member who offered outstanding service to the college. This year Al Fopp of the Hacienda is added to the list of recipients of this award. Mr. Fopp has catered coliege functions for five years in a row, and this is our way of expressing our thanks for his selfless efforts. The intramural program has served as a strong drawing card and unifying factor at the college this year. The founder of intramurals in the United States as well as an outstanding local student leader are honored in the Mitchell Award. This year's recipient is Rich Relpa, director of intramurals and the driving force behind the program's success. Former Board Chairman Chet Ross decided a few years ago that too much emphasis was put upon winning in athletics, and not enough on the spirit which keeps the competitors moving. With that thought he established the Ross Inspirational Award to be given to an outstanding student in the girls' athletic program. A tie in the voting left two winners this year, Rhonda Trask and Kathy Beyers; both girls were also strong competitors in athletics and ran on the U.S. champion relay team this year. Perhaps that award is the best possible closing note, for as much as winning may mean to us, it is still the spirit and the personality and the enjoyment of life which makes it all worthwhile. We can't all be winners in every activity, but we can al! make a difference in o u r o w n way. , ' · · · ' · stock quotes 31-v* Arncord Arner Amer Electric Power . .
