Why are they doing tkis? Are they broke? J.E. CULVER, Seymour, Tex. No, they're not broke. In fact, I would hazard a guess that they're all very comfortable. But when somebody dangles a good-sized check in front of their faces for a few hours work, naturally they go after it. Wouldn't you? +·* DEAR DICK: I have a friend attending acting school in California. What are the approximate odds of him becoming a star? L.A.P., Springfield, Mo. It's impossible to calculate, but they are very, very high. There are many thousands of people who call themselves actors. Only a few thousand make a living at it and, of those, maybe there are a hundred ' 'stars." I'd say the odds would be about 1,000 to 1. *** DEAR DICK: I have a six-bottle Scotch bet with a friud. We need your assistance in settling lie argument. I say Dina Merrill is married to Dale Robertson. Sie claims Dina is married to Robert Stack. PAT BOURKL, Naranja, Fla. Nobody gets the Scotch (except maybe me). Dina is Mrs. Cliff Robertson. *** DEAR DICK: Coild yo» please tell me who played the part of Stanley in the movie, "Siper Dad"? SANDRA FERRELL, North Augusta, S.C. . An actor named B. Kirby Jr. played the part of Stanley Schlimmer in "Super Dad." %·· DEAR DICK: 1 was wondering about a movie that I saw 01 TV once, a ad then (ever saw again. It was called "Evil Roy Slade," starring John Aslia. It was, in my opinion, a good movie and I would really like to know what happened to it. MELINDA WHITE, Eureka, Ca. I agree that it was good. Maybe too good, ft was made as a pilot for a series but the networks didn't buy it, so it went onto the shell and has been forgotten. I think the networks were afraid of it; comedy westerns rarely succeed. »f» DEAR DICK: Would you pleas* tell me bow Leslie Uggams got her stan on TV? I thought it was through Ed Sullivan. MRS. H NEHR1NGS, MoatoarsviUe, Pa. Leslie was a child prodigy -- she started on a local New York show when she was seven and was on many shows as a teenager. Her big break came when she-was,15 and sang on a CBS quiz sl.ow in that year ('58) called Name That Tune. She wound up winning 125,000 and a career. **» · DEAR DICK: I have been watcbiig Gffligan's Island for . .over a year. If you start to take Gilligan's Island seriously, you're in big - trouble. The next step is to believe professional wrestling and · The Six Million Dollar Man. · ' HOLLYWOOD - (NBA) Jeff, the youngest of the Bridges acting clan, may turn out to be the biggest Bridges of them all. He keeps going from film to film, and now he's making "King Kong," which could be a biggie (it could also be a loud flop, but we don't talk about that). Jeff says the new version of "King Kong" has been updated -- now the group isn't searching for a movie location, but for oil. Sounds reasonable. There's another Bridges f i l m out now -- Bob Rafelson's "Stay Hungry," which is a winner. So it looks like a banner year for Lloyd's son and Beau's kid brother. Jeff is eight years younger than Beau. He says they were always close, as kids, hut it was more of an uncle-nephew t h a n b r o t h e r - b r o t h e r relationship When Jeff was a boy, he admired his father and his big brother, and they were both actors. But there is some question about whether or not he had the acting bug himself. "Until recently," Jeff says, "whenever I was asked if I wanted to act when I was young, I'd say no. But a few weeks ago, my mother played me a tape she made when I was eight.! had been sick and to keep me amused she made believe she was interviewing me, and she taped it. And she asked me what 1 wanted to be when I grew up, and I said, 'An.actor.' " Jeff has made 13 films and he has no doubts at all about what he wants to be when he grows up -- he wants to continue acting, and also to go into direction and concentrate more on his music. He writes and performs as a musician. *** ! can't believe this, but Arthur Marx swears it's true. Marx once wrote a biography of Dean Martin and Jerry 1-ewis. Some time after the book came out, he was playing tennis with Dean Martin, Jr. 7:30 8:00 6:30 9:00 S 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 2 4 -5 6 7 9 10 2 3 5 6 7 S S 10 11 12 2 4 6 7 12 2 3 4 6 8 10 11 12 Welcome Kotter News Zoom Hawaii Rve-0 Welcome Kotter Welcome Hotter Wartona CMC Dialogue Brady Bunch Dinah! "He must have been about 16 or 17 at the time," Marx says. "And I happened to mention the book to him. And you know -- he didn't even know that his father had once been partnered with Jerry. I don't think the Martins talk to each other very much." Marx says he doesn't know if Dean liked the book. "I doubt he read it," he says. "In fact, I'm not even sure if he can read. I think the only book he ever read was 'Black Beauty,' because he thought it was about a horse he could bet on." Marx, of course, is the son of Groucho. He says-they don't speak to each other these days, "or, rather, Groucho doesn't speak to me." "I believe," he says, "my f a t h e r is the v i c t i m of brainwashing .by Erin Flem- .ing, .the girl who is with him all the time.
