NEW YORK - (NBA) Those familiar with the tenets of communism's architect. Karl Marx, are probably safe in assuming Das Kapital's author would have frowned upon the West's commercial development of the recording industry and its millionaire superstars. In contradiction to this capitalist pursuit and pastime however, most s a t e l l i t e nations within the orbit of the Soviet Union have come to enjoy this decadent preoccupation, even going so far as to invite music artists from (he West representing jazi. country western and rock, to tour their countries. If s u c h d e v e l o p m e n t s appear a betrayal of Marxist ideology and Karl is rolling in liis grave while the Soviet bloc rocks, he might find consolation in " t h e comparatively austere'Third World. There, m u s i c lovers w i t h more c a t h o l i c t a s t e s f i n d themselves in a vacuum, totally ignored by louring Western musicians --". either by the latter's choireor U.S. State Depanmenl design. Marx would surely be disappointed with his Third World disciples, though, if he were to learn of Van McCoy, the disco aristocrat who taught the West to "hustle." McCoy, currently "plotting his next worldwide tour, won't rein in his road show at Japan as most.artists do during their limited swing through the Orient. He plans to flash t h r o u g h Hong Kong, the P h i l i p p i n e s . S i n g a p o r e . Thailand, and. lingers crossed. South Vietnam. Considering Washington's undiplomatic batting average with the Third World, it would be too droll for words to see the ambassador of the Hustle succeed where others could not soothe the savage breast. Short Shots: Atlantic recording artists The Spinners hav»-- pulled themselves away from their habitually crammed lour itinerary to organize a benefit concert for singer Jackie Wilson. Wilson, struck down by a heart attack in the midst of a performance in Cherry Hill. N.J.. more than a year ago. has been lying comatose ever since while his medical hills continue to m o u n t . The Spinners are appealing to headline acts to appear in a benefit show in Cherry Hill with proceeds to go toward Wilson's hospital bills .. . Hendrix Onstage: BobCalvert of British band Hawkwind has written a play based on the early lite of Jimi Hendrix. "The Stars That Played With Laughing Sam's Dice." now running in London. Taj Mahal is a mosaic of everything black. What Taj Mahal is noX however, at least not totally anyhow, is his music - the music that misleads many into believing he is a shuffling "caricature from some Mark Twain novel. Now approaching age 34. comfortable and satisfied with his continuing musical evolution. Taj is not without rage, however. "It's pretty scary to some people to see me playing anyway but,, the way they remember years ago,'' he begins. "They can't understand something different so they condemn it Vd be up there playing just for the music and they demanded competition I don't play for that. I play for the music. "1 don't compete because 1 am in no races. There's room for everybody. Awhile back, we'd play on the bill with a lot of other bands back when most bands couldn't play any good live. We could and did. They'd put us on first and we'd put everybody else to shame. Papers the next day would say 'Mahal band steals show.' "We stole nothin' They didn't know how little those other musicians knew about music and I'd forgotten that. He losses his head. "They may have a right lo be there but the crime is when they misinterpret energy the energy of some old black Delta master and they steal his music and presence, or take his songs and water them down for another audience they take the credit." He shuts his eyes for a few seconds then resumes. "What hurt me deeply, though, was when my people did not understand my music." Taj commiserates briefly- over the fact many blacks view his music with contempt -- like it's an obscene glimpse back lo plantation slavery and peanut patches And he acknowledges many blacks have cast behind his music in favor of another, one that too often emulates flashy, gun- toting flesh dealers pushing around town in leopard skin El Dorados with a heart cat out in the back window. If my name was Carlos Santiago and I was Mexican, I could do folk songs for my people and they'd be proud Bui when it came to doing the same thing for my people, it wasn't their rejection alone. 1 have found (he record companies have strangled us. They said then. 'Don't move ahead, don't move sideways.' "They created a culture, a bunch of people and a deadend out of mediocrity. And that," he raps his massive knuckles sharply against the table, "is how we're manipulated. You never know what you should know and they only tell you about what you don't need." He sighs finally. "You can carry a little knowledge and travel f i n e but ignorance around your neck keepsyou under someone's foot."
