Christian is Interviewed along with everyone else of prominence In River's End, by Raymond Earl of Business Boosters, who proposes to publish a book about the town. A smooth-talking young man, Earl hints that "Wall Street" will see great possibilities In River's End after reading this book, and will soon transform the place Into a booming metropolis. But Dr. Christian, check ing on a neighboring town, finds that Earl's method is simply to flatter everyone Into buying copies of the book at exorbitant prices. The doctor Induces Stan Harvey, editor of the Enterprise help him stem the rising flood of vaniy swelled by Earl's references to "ty-soons," "professions," and "pioneer families." They publish a pamphlet written mainly by Dr.

Christian, and constsiting of strictly truthful, ego-deflating accounts of these ordinary men.
