CORPUS CHRIST1 TIMES, Fri., Aug. 13, 1971 7-E St. Laurent Bowed to Job Pressures Trip Is Ended PATRICIA SHELTON © Ckicago Dally N*ws - N E W YORK -- When a ftan's job gets bigger than he jan handle, something has to give. And that's the straw that JJroke the back of Paris couturier Yves Saint Laurent, per- haps the most influential trailblazer in world fashion. Earlier this week Richard Salomon, chairman of Lanvin-Charles of the Ritz, th* company that owns the majority interest in Saint Laurent, announced in New York that Saint Laurent is dropping out of the Paris couture showing and will move almost exclusively into his Rive .Gauche ready-fo-wear operation. 'Salomon' talked ,in depth SAVE 25% Use one of our charge plans, or Waster Charge/BankAmericard SWEENEYCO. 5410 PADRE-STAPLES MALL HOUSTON · McALLEN · VICTORIA* SHERMAN with the Chicago Daily News about what prompted the decision. - ' ' . ' · ' ' '. "The purpose is tv get out of the terrible load, of four collections (two couture; two Rive Gauche) a year," Salomon said. "He's a man who won't delegate and he can no longer continue to carry the load. Yves believes in ready-to-wear in the long run, that it's the direction of the future." Salomon said the decision was based on hard cold realism rather than -any attempt to drape the diminishing world of couture in black; The designer, who 'admittedly needs world publicity to make it all work, will concentrate on his Rive Gauche collection and hold his major press showing during the Paris ready-to-wear show in April and October. He will show a small collection, about 30 pieces of couture, to private clientele and major fashion press in February and September. Salomon said the couture will be limit- .ed to luxurious evening, wear "that can't be copied around the world for $29.50." Saint Laurent's rich customers can shop Rive Gauche for their d a y t i m e and sports clothes, which he says they're doing more and more anyway. The Saint Laurent decision which actually was made by Salomon, Pierre Berge, Saint Laurent's business director in Paris, and the designer last week--was a surprise only in the timing. He has been saying for years the world is moving in this direction. He and Salomon had been discussing the mechanics for the last two years, but Salomon said that not even he had thought it would come this soon--two weeks after Saint Laurent's fall couture opening in Paris. "Maybe he moved more quickly than he should have. It would have been easier with other people in the couture going along. It's not easy to go out on a limb alone," Salomon commented. Others will undoubtedly follow, and the big question is how soon. Pierre Cardin has been talking for years about doing only one couture collection a year and is moving heavily into ready-to-wear and world-wide franchising. Andre Courreges is also moving this way. Every major Paris couture house also is producing ready-to-wear-but none anywhere close to the extent of the Rive Gauche operation. Saint L a u r e n t ' s decision shuts out all stores except those that have in-store Rive Gauche boutiques. Boutiques now number 42 around the world, including seven in the United States. Salomon said the U.S. number will be rapidly expanded to 35. Mrs. W. A. Patton, 3101 Topeka, and Mrs. M i c h a e l Lynch, 948 Delaine, have returned from a two week trip to Hawaii and a week in Dallas. Getting them ready for back to school can be a real headache.
