It's His Last Stand of blank cards across the ocean to Pelplng (then Peking) where a corps of Chinese students at the index office began cutting up dictionaries and pasting the strange characters on separate cards. Among the volumes they manicured in this fashion was the Shuo Wen, the earliest Chinese dictionary, which had been "presented to the throne" in 121 A.D. The cards were then shuttled back to Cambridge again and filed away in big cases to await the long Job of translating, sifting out repetitious matter, and filling in gaps needed by students whether they are reading modern texts or ancient volumes.

For example, when the dictionary is completed, a given word that might have meant one thing in medieval times and another thing a hundred years later, will have all translations listed. Pronunciation Considered Then there's the matter of pronunciation. Some dictionaries go in for saying things as they say them in Peiplng, while others favor the Canton and other dialects. Said to be a triple dose of laugh tonic the show is a rollicking take eff on life in a hectic convention hotel. As the Banner 8isters, Faith, Hope and Charity, the three manage with no little mischief to further their careers as convention hostesses without sacrificing their heart interests. They are alternately abetted and impeded in the process by Robert Benchley and John Howard. Bench ley plays the role as Wllfurforce Puddle, befuddled hotel manager. The girls put on all their charm and keep all the men guessing long enough to produce many laughable scenes until all ends well.

Eric Blore, Hugh Connell and Una O'Conner head the supporting cast and Leigh Jones was the director. The original screen story was written by Richard Carroll. DICTIONARY IN CHINESE AND ENGLISH SET Project Still in Filing Stage After Six Years of Work By FRANK CAREY Cambridge, Jan. 3 (Wide World) Plenty of Ivy will grow on the buildings at Harvard before it settles a little matter of assembling the most comprehensive Chinese-to-English dictionary ever to grace a bookshelf. After six years of work, the project still is a filing clerk's nightmare.

The dictionary is sprawled over a large library office In the Harvard-Yenchlng Institute, with prospective entries occupying more than 1,225,000 filing cards in 400 filing cases. Professor Serge Elisseeff, director of the dictionary project, says with a sad shrug of his shoulders that he wouldn't take even a wild guess on how long it will take to whip the data into Its final form, although ho maintains it will take at least three years even to turn out an abbreviated dictionary he has in mind A tidbit of 3,000 pages. The professor is quick to point out that dictionary work in any language Is no breeze at best. But he says it's particularly slow going when your dictionary deals with a language that originated centuries before Christ, a language without an alphabet, and one ranging from the wisecracks of confucius to such modern terminology as Blitzkrieg, fifth column and parachute troops. "Why, it took 50 years to compile the Oxford-English dictionary," he said, "and for that, the compilers were dealing with a language that has an alphabet.

Chinese not only has no alphabet, but each word has a separate strange character that must be learned as a unit." Besides, you can't hang out Chinese characters on a linotype machine, but have to set them all by hand, and you can see why the dictionary won't be hitting the bookshelves a week from next Tuesday. It's the objective of the Harvard workers to give students of Chinese one master dictionary to save them rummaging through 16 or so as they do at the present time to trace down words and expressions whose meanings may have changed through the centuries. So, just for a started, Elisseeff and his staff decided to do a rewrite Job on 17 Chinese dictionaries and count- The trouble with most existing Chinese dictionaries, he says, is that their compilers were not adequately trained scholars, with the results that the volumes contain a multitude of sins according to modern dictionary standards. "Many of them were compiled by emperors," he said, "and one particular work looks as though it was done as a white-collar project Just authoritative one, compiled in 1892 was designed to aid persons living in China and reading only modern texts. Elisseeff, who is being assisted by experts at the University of California and Yale, says that while modern terminology will not be highlighted in the dictionary, it will include "the rapidly-increasing modern vocabulary which western civilization and grim necessity have forced upon the Chinese people." "That means words like blitzkrieg, Stuka, parachute and others," he said. No Chinese Slang There will be no Chinese slang, however it may be out of date before the dictionary is completed.
