"The primary strategy and goal is to enhance the visitor experience," Brady said, and noted that better landscaping, additional animals and expanded exhibits give the public a sense of pride and ownership. That, in turn, brings repeat customers, which means more revenues for the zoo. "We want to increase attendance so we can have money for new capital improvements," Brady said.

Attendance has steadily climbed in the past three years, according to numbers provided by the zoo. In 2006, the zoo saw 110,167 visitors. Last year, there were 137,236. Potter is readying for a new season. Expanded hours go into effect Wednesday, when the zoo will be open from 9 a.m.
