So it's only fitting the Falcons have a district win in their pockets two weeks before most Missouri teams begin district play. Glendale started and finished strong Thursday in a 38-12 win against Central in a battle of Springfield schools at Harrison Stadium on the campus of Drury University.

Carp goes distance as Cards top Rockies St. Louis starter tosses his first complete game of the season. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS ST. LOUIS Chris Carpenter threw his first complete game of the season Thursday night and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Colorado Rockies 6-1.

Carpenter (16-9) snapped a four-game losing streak during which he posted a 7.17 ERA with the four-hitter. The Rockies, who were eliminated from the postseason on Tuesday, have lost 10 of 11. Carpenter, who threw just 100 pitches, retired the last 10 batters in making his major league-leading and career-best 35th start. He walked two and struck out four in the 29th complete game of his career. Albert Pujols had two hits, reached base three times and picked up his NL-leading 118th RBI.

Pujols passed Colorado outfielder Carlos Gonzalez, who did not play Thursday and has 117 RBIs. Gonzalez entered Thursday's play with a 13-point lead in the NL batting race over Cincinnati's Joey Votto. Gonzalez, who is hitting .338, will play today and Saturday, Rockies manager Jim Tracy said. This is only the second series for these clubs this season. St.

Louis was swept by Colorado on July 6-8 at Coors Field. They have had the Cardinals' number recently, winning 11 of the last 13 meetings. Colorado starter Cole Hammel (10-9) went just three innings, allowing five runs and eight hits. St. Louis took a 1-0 lead in the first on double by Pujols.

The Cardinals added two runs in the second on an RBI single by Brendan Ryan and a sacrifice fly by Skip Schu-maker. St. Louis made it 5-0 in the third when Pujols scored on a single by Colby Rasmus, who came home on a ground-out by Matt Pagnozzi. Pag-nozzi drove in the Cardinals' final run in the seventh. Colorado's lone run came in the sixth when Dexter Fowler tripled and scored on a wild pitch.

Notes: Cardinals minor league SS Lainer Bueno, a member of the club's Venezuelan Summer League roster, received a 50-game suspension Thursday for testing positive for clen-burcrol. The suspension is effective at the start of the next season. Colorado's Troy Tulowitzki, who has 40 RBIs in September, the most ever for a Rockic, did not drive in a run against St. Louis. The Parkview High School football team begins its quest for a postseason berth tonight against visiting Willard. "Our own lack of mental toughness is what killed us tonight." Juniors Kinsey McCarter and Jessica Maurer had five kills each to lead Kickapoo (16-4, 3-1 OC). McCarter also had a team-high 11 assists. Senior Taylor Carmichael led the Chiefs with 14 digs and Thater ended with three blocks. Parkview junior Danielle Mostrom led the Vikings (8-9, 2-2) with 13 assists and had six kills while senior McKenzi Payton had a team-high seven kills.

"Danielle is a phenomenal setter and probably my best hitter," Wright said. "She's one of those kids that can do it all and I expect a lot from her like she did tonight. "We didn't give up, but 1 think it's hard for us to believe at times that we're as good as we really are." Summary, 3D By Don Abernathy FOR THE NEWS-LEADER Winning in volleyball takes a lot more than just hammering down a kill off a perfect set it also calls for a great deal of finesse. And while it's true that making plays in other areas of the game often goes unnoticed, it's quite often those subtle plays that win matches. On Thursday, the Chiefs showcased their all-around team style with a 25-17, 25-16 Ozark Conference win at Parkview.

"I'm excited that I have some attackers that can put some stink on the ball," Kickapoo coach Debbie Downs said. "Rut I think we're playing a lot smarter and try ing to place the ball and mix the tempo better. I was very pleased about that tonight." Parkview trailed early in the opening game (7-2), but cut the Kickapoo lead to three points on three separate occasions (with 18- 15 being the last) before Chiefs sophomores Emily Thater and Maris Below finished off game one. Thater, a 6-foot-3 middle blocker, had two kills and two blocks as Kickapoo began to pull away. It was Below's block-kill that ended the first set.

"Emily and Maris have some great leaders ahead of them that are giving them the confidence to just go all out and be stat leaders on the floor," Downs said. Parkview took the lead three times in the early stages of game two (9-7), but doubt crept in and Kickapoo came back to steal game two and the match. "In the three years that I've been here, that's the best we've ever played against Kickapoo,".
