The Tigers can make it an even seven games by getting three outs tonight. DETROIT (AP) After 28 innings of baseball Tuesday, the Detroit Tigers can count one victory, a major league record and a pretty good hold on a second victory.

It all adds up to a 6'2-game was a week ago at Minnesota. Tommy Harper broke starter John Hiller's spell with a single leading off the third. He scored on Jose CardenaPs single following a sacrifice by Cleveland starter Luis Tiant. Hiller set a major league record by fanning the six Indians. The old mark of five consecutive outs at the start of a game was jointly held by seven major league pitchers. The most notable was Walter Johnson of Washington. The others were Lefty Gomez and Ryne Duren of the New York Yankees and Sam McDowell of Cleveland in the American League and Dazzy Vance of the Brooklyn Dodgers, Bobby Bolin of San Fran- cisco and Bob Gibson of St. Louis in the National League.

The Detroit second baseman has been bothered with late season fatigue in recent seasons but isn't showing any signs of tiring in this year's stretch drive. "I was tired tonight," said McAuliffe. But I'll be okay as long as we keep playing single games. Manager Mayo Smith says he will put Joe Sparma back in the bullpen to try and work out a control problem.

Sparma hasn't won a game in nearly a month. He joins another former starter, Mickey Lolich, in the bullpen. "You don't take pitchers like Sparma and Lolich and shoot them," said Smith. "They may come back. I held off a long time on switching my starting rotation.

I'll go with John Hiller. Pat Dobson and Daryl Patterson for the time being." PHILADELPHIA (UPD Former welterweight and middleweight champion Emile Griffith, fresh from his victory over previously unbeaten Gypsy Joe Harris, doesn't see how Nino By ED SCHUYLER JR. Associated Press Sports Writer It was out and you're on and on and you're out. Any fan knows that's no way to play baseball. The Baltimore Orioles know it, too.

Tony Oliva led off the sixth inning for Minnesota Tuesday night and struck out. But Oriole catcher Andy Etchebarren failed to handle the third strike and Oliva reached first. One out later. Bob Allison homered and Minnesota had a 5-0 lead. The Orioles then fought back to trail by only 5-4 with one out in the ninth.

Up stepped pinch hitter Larry Haney, who lashed the ball to right field and ended up on second base. But he failed to touch first and was out. Ron Perranoski retired the next hitter and the second-place Orioles were beaten 5-4 to fall 612 games behind the American League-leading Detroit Tigers. The Tigers edged Cleveland 2-1 in 17 innings on Dick Tracewski's run-scoring single and led 5-2 after eight innings of the nightcap of the twi-nicht doubleheader when it was suspended by a 1 a.m. EDT, curfew.

It will be completed tonight. In other American League action. Boston trounced the Chicago White Sox 8-2 and California beat Washington 10-3 before losing to the Senators 1-0. The New York Yankees and Oakland were not scheduled. Cesar Tovar scored the first two Minnesota runs and drove in the third.

Frank Robinson and Bob Johnson drove in Baltimore runs in the sixth. The Orioles got another pair in the eighth on Boog Powell's RBI double and an error. Boston wrapped up its victory over the White Sox with five runs in the fourth. Carl Yastrzemski hit his 14th homer leading off the fourth, then drove in another run in the inning when he walked with the bases loaded. He also batted in a run with a sacrifice fly in the first.

Jim Lonborg, the Red Sox ace who was injured in an off-season skiing accident, boosted his record to 3-3 as the Red Sox won for the sixth time in the last seven games. Lonborg was lifted for a pinch hitter in the eighth, with Boston leading by five runs. Joe Coleman scattered four singles, struck out eijzht and got the only run he needed when Cap Peterson scored on a wild pitch in the fourth inning in Washington's first game victory. Peterson singled, stole second, moved to third on Hank Allen's single and came in on Jim McGlothlm's wild pitch. Benvenuti can avoid fighting him again for the middleweight title.

Griffith said his 12-round unanimous decision Tuesday night over the flashy Gypsy in a record indoor gate fight here, eliminated all contenders for the Italian's crown. A spectrum crowd of 13.875 paid $118,389 to watch the Virgin Island native overcome Harris's speed in the first four rounds and dominate the bout the rest of the way. "If Benvenuti fights someone else, then he won't get the money he would get in a fight with me." Griffith said in his dressing room. Asked why Benvenuti would fight him again for the fourth time, the 30-year-old former champion said, "Money talks. look what it did tonight." Griffith said he fought Harris to work his way up to ficht the middleweight champ.

"With anyone else. Benvenuti will only make $20. "00; with me. $175,000. like our last match in New York in March," Griffith said.

The fast-moving 23-year-old Harris, who had to shed 24 pounds at the weigh-in, said after his first defeat, his weight of did not make him sluggish. He said that "experience" beat him, not himself. He said he couldn't do what he did with non-contenders. "After all. this is the first time I fniisht a champion." Harris said.
