Sympathy to young Jennings family, friends Our community is saddened by the death of 14-year-old Jaquavius Jennings who was a seventh grader at Bettye Mae Jack Middle School and one who loved football. He passed away on April 19 and was memorialized on Monday, April 25 at Union Grove M.B. Church. A beautiful homegoing was held with Rev. Rochelle Wright officiating and delivering the eulogy.

Our prayers continue to be with his family. Please remember Dr. and Mrs. Sheldon (Patricia) Graves in your prayers on the death of their six- month old granddaughter Marion, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.

Lofton (Kiley) Wilborn. Please keep the parents and grandparents in your prayers. Our prayers are with the family of Forest native, Sellis Hayes, brother of Theopolis Hayes, who died in California last week. Our prayers are with his family. We join others in mourning the loss of Mr.

Purple Rain, and salute his memory for such beautiful and positive music. We are sorry to learn of the death of George Dahmer, son of civil rights icon and humanitarian Vernon Dahmer, who passed on April 10 in Jackson. Please remember his family in your prayers. The life of Bernice Harris Allen was celebrated in love and class on Saturday, April 23, at Chapel M.B. Church in Jackson.

The eulogy, words of comfort, music, and tributes were so very appropriate for this gentle and nurturing Christian woman. Our prayers are with her family. Alderwoman Cynthia Slaughter Melton and family were among the 35,000 attending the Jackson State University (JSU) Spring Commencement Saturday, April 23 at Veterans Memorial Stadium. First Lady of the United States Michelle R. Obama was the commencement speaker.

The crowd roared as the First motorcade entered Stadium. United States Congressman, Second District, Bennie Thompson brought greetings and JSU President Dr. Carolyn Meyers introduced First Lady Michelle Obama. The First Lady spoke to the class of 2016 on the history of the Memorial Stadium. She further advised them to learn and teach their history and to be their best and choose Mrs.

Obama also challenged the students to vote and make a difference in this world. She thanked the JSU family for the Honorary Doctorate when she said, a Tiger Melton noted that the wait in line time was well worth it. Other JSU graduates and families also enjoyed the day. The young contestants and their parents and family stood tall on the Helen Owens foundation and legacy as they vied for the title of 2016 Helen Owens Pageant winner. The event was a beautiful expression of love to the late Mrs.

Helen Owens, one of the founding members of the Slaughter Relay for Life. Competing for the title were Jimmieunia Alexia Harrison, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Harrison; Taileigh Joy Wheaton, daughter of Tasha Jones and Bernard Wheaton; Tahj Tyreka Pinkston, son of Shilina Pinkston; Damarion Charles Ratliff, son of Gerlesa Rodriquez and Charles Ratliff; Tomia Bridges, daughter of Janet Patrick and Timothy Bridges; TaVion Pharrell Evans, son of Tamisha Evans and Harold Patrick; Jaci Bridges, daughter of Janet Patrick and Timothy Bridges. The winners were Queen Taileigh Wheaton, Jimmieunia Harrison first alternate, Tomia Bridges second alternate, and Jaci Bridges third alternate.

Male winners were King Damarion Charles Ratliff, Tahj Pinkston second alternate, and TaVion Evans third alternate. Special thanks from team captain Cynthia Slaughter Melton to Carolyn Macon for coordinating this event. Thanks also to Chris Macon, Laryan Evans, and Octavia Kincaid We enjoyed The Rabbi Perry Nussbaum Lecture Series held at Millsaps College Friday, April 15, where the theme was from Within: Bringing Balance and Truth to the Historic Natchez and the lecturer was Madeline Iles. It was most interesting and the audience was filled with questions. On the previous night, the Nussbaum Civil Justice Awards Dinner was held at the Jackson King Edward Hotel Ballroom.

Local attorney Constance Slaughter-Harvey was honored, along with Dr. Hollis Watkins and Ms. Madeline Iles, with the 2016 Nussbaum Civil Justice Award. Mrs. guests were her daughter and family, Constance, James and James Burwell, and niece Katherine Harvey Smith.

Happy birthday greetings to May babies born during the first week of May, namely: Mrs. Helen Harris and Georgia Patrick (May 1), Lodena Holifield (May 3), and KeAreona Rauls (May 4). Charlean Youngblood is Mission President and Rev. Nathaniel Robinson is the Pastor. Pastor Nathaniel Robinson and the New Bethel Family gathered at the home of Mother Leatha Stingley to help her celebrate her 100th birthday. Mother Stingley looked so pretty dressed in her spring outfit. Daughter Leatha Mae did a wonderful job of getting her mom ready for company.

Pastor Robinson and the Deacons administered communion at the request of the family. Then everyone sang happy birthday. Of course there was too many of us to crowd her living room so we gathered in the yard under the trees. Pastor and Deacons greeted and prayed for Mother Stingley on the covered porch. Hats off to Leatha Mae and Lois Shelton for making the arrangements.

Pastor Robinson presented the family with gift from the church and Home Mission President, Charlean Youngblood presented Mother Stingley with a present from the Home Mission Department. We all remember the contributions she made to New Bethel when she was well. Leatha Mae thanked everyone for coming. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Nu Pi Zeta Chapter, Forest, Image Awards Banquet was held on Sunday, April 24. This was an awesome program to honor dedicated individuals throughout the community.

Honorees were: Community Service, Sheldon Thomas; Professional Woman of the Year, Heroine Jacqueline L. Thigpen; Professional Man of the Year, Rep. Tom Miles; Business Woman of the Year, Mrs. Stacy J. Reed; Businessman of the Year, Mr.

James Charles Hayes; Zeta of the Year, Mrs. Jenifer Carolyn Harold Buford; Sigma of the Year, Brother Tate; and Amicae of the Year, First Lady Marquita Patrick. Mistress of Ceremony was Dr. Glenda Nickson; Welcome by Little Miss Hayes; Welcome, Jasmine Page and Invocation, Natasha Smith. Entertainment performed by Mime.

Words of Encouragement were given by Mr. Spann. Closing remarks by Dr. Lorraine Dozier, President. Mt.

Carmel Usher Day program was a great success. We know Mt. Carmel is a church with a big heart and they were shown love by the outpouring of ushers. Like an Energizer Battery the line of ushers during the March kept going and going. Rev.

Sheldon Thomas delivered the message delivered a dynamic and thought provoking message. Text came from Psalm The topic was Overlooked but Never He reminded Ushers that they will often be overlooked but their service is never worthless. He warned them to look out for three type of people entering the sanctuary 1) End Seaters; 1) Middle Seaters; and 3) Same Seaters. MC was Ann Laster. All program participants did an excellent job.

Welcome, Queen Keys, Response was given by Mary Lofton, Pleasant Hill; Occasion, Bro. Titus Palm; Reading, Janice Fitten. The choir did an outstanding job and the Little Rock Ushers had the Usher March on beat. Remarks given by President, Janice Fitten and Pastor Neal D. Keeton, Sr.

Usher Department present were: Union Grove M.B.C.; Pleasant Hill, Mt. Moriah, New Bethel, Little Rock and Harmony. Melva Moss was honored with guests during the weekend of April 16-17. Cheryl Albert from Mobile, along with friend Jesse Thomas, spent her birthday with Cousin Melva and the Smith Clan. Melva who is an excellent cook had dressing and fried chicken on the table early Sunday morning.

Other family members started dropping in after church services. One of the first visitors was Jason Smith. It was great seeing and greeting cousins you have not seen in over a year. Linda Hawkins traveled to Milwaukee, to be with her daughter, Tysha Y. Chambers (Fredrick) at the funeral of Tysha father Mr.

Jerry Lee Ragsdale. Jerry was born and raised in Scott County. He is a 1973 graduate of Scott Central High School. He will be missed by his family. Special prayers for in and bereaved families.

It was great to see Mother Margaret Bates at church and Elizabeth Palm (Mt. Carmel) attending worship services again. Continue to pray for Jack Johnson, Nell Pace and Retta Hughes. Happy Anniversary: Quentin and Wilma Mosley (May 13), Isaac and Pamela Smith, Jr. (May 22).

There will be much fun and activities. We are asking the many churches in our area to form softball teams within their church and play at the park. Midway M.B. Church Sunday School Graduation will be held May 1st during Sunday School. The graduates are Alexiah Shepard. Innaius Shepard, Jadarius McClendon, Jakoby Anderson, Jeremiah Lyles, Colby Banks, Jody Matheny, Tyrese Whittington, Diamond Whittington and LaBoris Ross. Congratulations to Tevin Nickols, who graduated from Jackson State University on last Saturday with a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education.

He was honored to be a graduate with First Lady Michelle Obama giving the address. Tevin is the son of Brenda Nickols and the late Rev. Sylvester Nickols. Grandson of Mandy McBeath and the late Jerry McBeath, and the late Mr. and Mrs.

Ollie Nickols. Congratulations to Diamond Whittington who achieved the honor of salutatorian from Leake County School in Walnut Grove. Diamond is the daughter of Pastor Ronnie Whittington and First Lady Vernita Mann Whittington. The granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs.

Robert and Helen Mann, Francis Tate, and Mrs. Sillar and the late Devon Whittington. Congratulations also to LaBoris Ross on his graduation from Scott Central Attendance Center. LaBoris is the son of Eric Ross and Tammy Jackson, the grandson of Delie Shepard, Mr. and Mrs.

Percy and Dorothy Shepard, Jennie Hampton and the late Andrew Jackson, Bernice Shepard Ross and Curtis Ross. Congratulations to Tamyra Greer the daughter of Jonte and Dr. Tomika Wilson Greer, celebrated her seventh birthday on Friday, with a party at home. Her grandparents, Thomas and Dr. Locord Wilson, motored to Houston to celebrate with her.

One of her aspirations was to ride the big Ferris Wheel in downtown Houston. She got up the nerve and rode it Saturday. Adam Shepard the son of Ryan Shepard and Alma Kazic celebrated his 5th birthday on Tuesday by going to the Jackson Zoo with his Head Start classmates.
