STATE JOURNAL Jan. Staff photos by GINGER SHARP Survival lesson How long can you survive without food and water and what can you do to keep warm in the cold wilderness? About 20 area youths are learning the answers to those questions and others in a survival class offered by the Woldumar Nature Center. Above, students Pat Zollner (left), and Kurt Bollwahn get a few lessons on how to build a bark shelter from instructor Carol Beverwyk. Below, 6-year-old Josh Greene steps inside and The Trash Monster, built at Michigan State University and donated to the nature center, grabbed his attention. Students of the fiveweek-long class, which began Saturday, also learn about different kinds of tracks left by animals.

Did minority contractor break law? GRAND RAPIDS (AP) The president of a minority contractors group took federal money for work he never performed and gave money earmarked for his company to a white contractor, in apparent violation of federal law, a newspaper claims. Jerome Sorrells, who is black and president of the Minority Contractors Association of Grand Rapids, kept approximately $1,700 but did no work on a federally financed project in Alma, the Grand Rapids Press reported Thursday. WORK BY minority-owned companies must account for 10 percent of the cost of a project that is financed by federal public works grants, the paper said. Sorrells' group, meanwhile, is suing the city of Grand allegedly using a black-owned Detroit roofing company as a front for a white builder working on the city's $50 million convention center. The suit also names the Grand Rapids-Kent County building authority and the center contactor.

City officials say the roofer has supervised the work himself and simply hired a crew from a white contractor. Court records show Sorrells testified that his attempts to get work under a public works grant were rejected. But in 1978, he twice signed Department of Commerce forms certifying that he was the minority contractor on a public works project for the Alma school Paramedic unit, auto collide in East Lansing police are investigating a crash involving, an Ingham County Sheriff's unit and a car driven by an East Lansing woman, which sent the woman to Sparrow Hospital's intensive care unit Saturday where she was listed tion. The carousel will be the centerpiece of two exhibits, one of early American woodcarving and one of American amusements. Museum goers will be able to take a ride on the merrygo-round.
