Women feel they can take him home to Mother, then to a motel afterward. The prototype was Johnny Depp, Fox's first sex symbol. Now the network has variations. There's Scott Wolf on "Party of Five" and Jamie Walters on "Beverly Hills, 90210." And there's Michael DeLorenzo, who plays Detective Eddie Torres on "New York Undercover," at 9 p.m. today on Channel 47.

Eddie is not your typical TV cop, DeLorenzo says. "He loves his job; he's a perfectionist." He sinks into into each case. And he's surrounded by family. "There's a lot of me in Eddie," DeLorenzo said. The actor, like the character, isn't one of those granite cliches.

He'll talk about family, about emo-. tions, about his first big show-busi- ness swirl: "I toured with the American Ballet Theatre, at 15." DeLorenzo grew up in the Bronx, as the second of four children. His dad, a jazz pianist, is Italian; his mom, who teaches pregnant teens, is Puerto Rican and his strongest influence. "I started out as a flamenco dancer at 7," DeLorenzo says. Soon, he had scholarships to the School of American Ballet and the New York School of Ballet He attended the High School of Performing Arts and a conservatory.

The setback came after he had toured as a principal dancer with the U.S. Terpsichore Company. DeLorenzo injured his knee and needed a fresh career. His own preference? "I've wanted dramatic acting roles," he says. Mostly, TV put him in cute-guy comedies, including "Head of the Class." The "New York Undercover" role was a long shot "It was written for two African Americans," DeLorenzo says.

"So I had to do some talking, just to get in there." On the surface, "Undercover" is typical Fox two young cops (Malik Yoba and DeLorenzo) working the streets, to a hip-hop beat. Tonight, they pose as porn-video producers. Beyond that, however, is a thoughtful show by "Law and Order" producer Dick Wolf. "It hits home," DeLorenzo says, "because it's about emotion." And it captures a field he finds fascinating. "Bein' a cop might be boring a lot of that time, but you get that 60-second charge of crazy adrenalin," he said.

"When you're running down an alley, you have to be totally aware, totally focused." Then there's undercover duty. cop is like an actor," DeLorenzo said.
