Festus is a city of 8,700 people about 30 miles south of St Louis. Hih travel costs by 7. school board a puzzle Members of the St. Louis School' Board spent $79,000 traveling to education conferences and meet- ings in the last year, far more thaii" districts of similar size in the state. That amount is also much more than the board spent in recent years on travel and more than double the budgeted amount.

School district officials have not been able to fully explain the sudden increase, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Friday. During the 1998-99 school year, the board spent $18,535 on travel, a' figure that went up to $27,596 in 1999-2000. "Obviously, for us, that's a concern," said Sheryl Davenport, head of St. Louis Teachers Union Local 420.

"This is public money $80,000 is a whole lot of money." Destinations of board members included Boston, Denver, Las Vegas, New York, San Diego and Washington. All the trips appear to have been for school purposes. BARRY COUNTY Thirty-six abandoned dogs taken from home Inspectors with the Missouri Department of Agriculture's Animal Care Facilities Act Program helped remove 36 abandoned dogs Thursday from a residence in Exeter. The Barry County Sheriffs Department and Missouri Pet Breeders Association members assisted in removing the dogs, mostly Australian shepherds, who were left at the residence by their owner, who does not live at the home. The dogs were taken to a Cassville veterinarian for emergency evaluation and treatment.

Members of the breeders association will house and care for the dogs until final disposition is made. Premier Dog Food Co. of Mount Vernon donated food for the animals. JEFFERSON CITY Researcher wants calls about odd-acting doves The Missouri Department of Conservation wants to know if Missouri residents see doves that act abnormally. Wildlife Research Biologist John Schulz is conducting a multiyear study of how a disease called trichomoniasis may affect mourning dove populations in Missouri.

The disease, which often kills its victims, is caused by a protozoan parasite called Trichomonas gallinae. The one-celled parasites create sores in birds' mouths and throats, making it difficult for them to swallow or drink. The disease spreads most readily when birds are crowded together. Dry conditions force birds to gather around scarce water sources, increasing transmission. Hot weather creates conditions favorable for the parasite's growth.

The dove disease study will continue through next year. He asks that Missourians watch for doves with symptoms of trichomoniasis. Infected doves may have difficulty flying, act listless and have swollen necks, Schulz says. If you find birds with trichomoniasis symptoms, call Schulz at (573) 882-9880, Ext. 3218.

BONNE TERRE Two lolled when driver fails to stop at sign Two people died Friday when the car they were in failed to stop for a stop sign in St. Francois County, the Missouri Highway Patrol said. st.Li.giJi Kansas City fcl rl Friday in a traffic accident that shut down Interstate 55 south of St. Louis for several hours, police said. Festus police chief Timothy Lewis said Jokerst's husband Martin and his mother were also killed.

Martin Jokerst's father was also in the car and was injured in the accident. "Her true ambition was to better the living environment for the citizens of Festus and the employees of the city," Lewis said. "She was truly a great mayor." The Missouri Highway Patrol said troopers spent much of the afternoon after the 2:15 p.m. accident trying to figure out exactly what happened. Police believe Jokerst was traveling south on 1-55 when a car traveling north crossed over the median and struck her car near the Imperial exit.
