24-223-a Few Timely-Items Of Interest Eckei-sall a Great Kicker Walter Eckexsall, Chicago University's wonderful quarterback, now lying at the point of death from cancer of the stomach, was quite the greatest dropkicker ever developed in the history of American football. Twice he dropkicked five goals against an opposing eleven. On November 18, 1905, Eckersall booted field goals from the 36, 25, 5, 25 and IS-yard Iidcs against Il linois. In the following year, playing against Nebraska on November 24, he dropkicked field goals from the S. 34.

34, 30 and 20 yard lines. Against Wisconsin, October 3, Eckersall sailed over three field goals each from the "5 yard line. Eckersalls record of five drop- kicked field goals in one game equals, that set up by Bernie Trafford, the old Harvard Star, who booted over five against Cornell on November 1, 1S90. two from the 35 yard line and three from the 30 yard line. But Trafford never had another day like that one.

Magnates Are in I Ynn "There will be plenty of fighting when the magnates gather here next week to "We don't care what the American league does'." said President Tener, today, "we are ready "The American League is prepared to cut loose from the National league if" "The National league is strong enough to paddle its own "Teamwork is sacily lacking in baseball circles when There are BolsheviM on this sid of the pond, right among baseball men, too. Cutting Training Work Down Among the scemes sure to come up for discussion when the magnates meet next week will lie one for shortening the training trip as a means of saving money. Clubs planning long jaunts such as the Cubs to California and the White Sox and Giants to Texas, will hardly greet this suggestion. They will lose even more money by the proposed pcheme. Ban Johnson is said to believe two weeks sufficient for preparing a major league club, provided the players report in any kind of shape.

Barry Herrmann would make the training season last three weeks. Those five and six weeks in Dixieland are to be mere history next spring, that's sure. War to Help Boxinsr One effect of the war will be a rejuvenation of boxing, which has rather gone to seed in the past ten years or so. Thousands of young men are now being taught tho elements of boxing for use in handling the bayonet, and they are not likely to forget their knowledge on their return from Europe. Clark Griffith likes to tell how baseball was an outgrowth of the war between the North and South, flourishing everywhere in the army camps of the Union forces.

The same may be said of boxing in the new national army, for it ia flourishing everywhere. Despite the nambypambies, war does make for manly men. It is a certaintv that the returning armies will bring hack with them an innate love of boxing, of playing football and baseball, of running and leap ing in the open air. This is the story of the ages. Fred Fulton.

Cliampion FYed Pulton's willingness to lay claim to Jess WHlard's ring title, de fending it against all comers, will start a jamboree all around. Every heavyweight in the country who ever went ten rounds to no decision with Fulton will dispute the Minnesota man right to tne honors, and yet from where we sit, Fulton has quite the best claim to the crown, providing Willard really means to quit boxing. WTth Willard on the Fhelf, Fulton looks to be the best of the poor lot of beavies now in the ring. He has sown superiority over all of them. Fulton may not be as great as the champions of the past, but where ia there a better man, barring Willard, now working at the game? Archer Defeats Golfer In Ohio By A New Method Winning a golf championship of a club without using balls, weapons or a caddie is quite an unusual feat, but one which was performed by Samuel G. McMeen. of the Columbia Country Club.

Ohio. It was this way: W. A. Ireland, the cartoonist, former champion of the club, had issued a challenge for a match in which he was to go over the course in fewer strokes with his golf clubs than another man could, using bow and arrow to make the distances. McMeen is an archer.

so the challenge was accepted, and the match played before a good sized gallery. Ireland was defeated in a medal play contest at eighteen holes. 56 to 92. The golfer was somewhat off his game, but McMeen's fine work with the arrows was a delight. He got a bad start, taking seven shots to make his first hole.

His trouble was in shooting too hard on the green and the arrow "skidding" off. On the other holes he adopted different tactics and played several in par golf, many of his shots being, well over 200 yards. Instead of shooting into the hole, the archer was required to perforate a card of the size of the cup. laid beside it.
