something. They have a real need for loving adults to help them manage their anger in constructive ways." The five-day series on competition, with a companion program, Mister Rogers Talks with Parents About Competition, to be broadcast the evening of May 30 at 10 p.m. EDT, is the second theme-oriented production of the year. Rogers was at work on a five-day Neighborhood series on competition, to be broadcast by public TV stations June 1-5, when the idea for Violence in the News occurred to him. He began work on a script, and that's when he decided to go to the kids themselves as he has done so many times in the past for their thoughts.

"There wasn't one child who didn't know what I was talking about when I asked why the man shot the president and his friend," Rogers says. "I asked them why people become killers. The responses invariably were that when they were children, nobody loved them, or cared for them. If that isn't compassionate," he says, "1 dont know what is." Rogers says it's his perception that children are affected not only by the violence they see in the news, but that which is passed off as entertainment "I just think so often there is such a terrible image of the value of human life," he says. "A lot of the violence they see is verbal, but it's all the same." There is a subtle side-effect to the omnipresent violence that may be as damaging to children in the long run, Rogers says.

"Children are frightened, not only because they are afraid someone might hurt them, but because they wonder whether they might be incited themselves to hurt someone else." Rogers says, 'It can be very scary for a child to lose control of himself or herself, or bite or hurt someone or to break ByTOMJORY Associated Press Writer NEW YORK (AP Fred Rogers doesn't merely wonder how youngsters feel about the world that often seems tn engulf them in confusion and sometimes fear. "I need to hear from the lads," says the creator of public TVs Uister Rogers' Neighborhood, back in his office after a day talking with school children. Tve been very concerned about all the stuff kids have been seeing on television recently, Rogers says, "reports on young kids being snatched in the South, the president being shot, and the spectacular things the space shuttle and the hostages' return. It seems there is so much acting-out on television that is so exceedingly he says, "that I'm afraid many kids will get the idea that that's what most people are like." As usual, Rogers has an appropriate response Violence in the News: Helping Children Understand to be offered Public Broadcasting Service stations. As with most PBS programs, air date and time may vary.

"A sudden rash of highly publicized violence and violent deaths can't help but be deeply unsettling for all of us," Rogers says in explaining his decision to produce the special on extremely short notice. "We all have to wonder at moments like this whether the whole structure and order of our world is still holding together. "And how on earth should we answer our children's questions?
