Navy secretary nominee Colin McMillan found dead LOS ANGELES (AP) Oscar-winning director John Schlesinger, who daringly brought gay characters into mainstream cinema with "Midnight Cowboy" and tapped into nightmares with the teethdrilling torture of "Marathon Man," "died Friday at 77. The British-born filmmaker had a debilitating stroke in December 2000, and his condition had deteriorated significantly in recent weeks. On Thursday, he was taken off life support at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs.

He died about 5:30 a.m., hospital spokeswoman Eva Saltonstall said. Schlesinger broke ground in 1969 with his first American film, "Midnight Cowboy." It starred Jon Voight as a naive Texan who turns to prostitution to survive in New York and Dustin Hoffman as the scuzzy, ailing vagrant Ratso Rizzo. The stocky, baldheaded filmmaker who was gay said in 1970: "I'm only interested in one thing that is tolerance. I'm terribly concerned about people and the limitation of freedom. William Young Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Heritage Bible Study Club and American Red Cross Overseas Association.

During World War II, she served in the American Red Cross in New Guinea and the Philippine Islands. Mrs. Harrison was preceded in death by her husband, Guy F. Harrison, with whom she shared a deep love of Texas the Deep East Texas Club and anything "Aggie." She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Gay and Kenneth Kirkland; her son and daughter-in-law Guy N. and Lucy Harrison; and her son Kim D.

Survivors also include eight grandchildren, Bud Summers, Gif Summers, Charlie Mack Summers, Parker Harrison, Worth Harrison, Anna Harrison, Clay Kirkland and Kay Kirkland, and six great grandchildren. Mr. Reiland passed away Thursday, July 24, 2003, at Hospice of East Texas in Tyler. Roy Reiland was born Dec. 24, 1922, in Palacios, the son of Roy Louis Reiland Sr. and Myra Katherine Smith Reiland.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Longview and a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. Mr. Reiland served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He and wife Dorothy were residents of Houston for many years. They moved to Kilgore in 1987, following his retirement from Hughes Tool where he had worked for 42 years. Mr. Crowson died Thursday, July 24, 2003, in a Longview hospital. He was born April 5, 1958, in Shreveport. He worked for Kansas City Southern Railroad and was a Baptist and a member of the Future Farmers of America Booster Club. He is survived by his wife, Mitzi Crowson; one son, Charles Jeb Crowson; and one daughter, Kaitlen Faith Crowson.

All are of Hughes Springs.
