Blaine Ramsey Jews Prepare For Observance Of Hanukah The Festival of Hanukah, an eight-day holiday com- memorating history's first struggle for religious freedom, will be celebrated by Jews throughout the world beginning Sunday at sundown. During the Sabbath service, Friday evening at Congregation ShaareyZedek Synagogue, 1924 Coolidge, East Lansing, there will be a Hanukah candle lighting service with special prayers and songs. CHILDREN OF the Religious School will present a Hanukah Program on Sunday morning, Dec.

15. There will be a candlelight service, songs, exchange of gifts and creative "playlets" on the holiday theme, prepared by each class. Known as the Feast of Lights, Hanukah, which means dedication, goes back more than 2,100 years when Judea was under the domination of a Syrian monarch Antiochus who sought to coerce the Jews into the worship of idols. Led by the Maccabeans, the Jews resisted and, after years of guerilla warfare, routed the enemy and re-dedicated the temple in Jerusalem which had been descecrated by the pagans. Victorious, the Judeans proceeded to cleanse the temple.

A legend has it that the amount of oil available to kindle the Eternal Light in the sanctuary was enough for only one day, but riyraculously endured for eight days. The legend is a dramatic way of saying that a good cause, upheld at first by few, will win augemented support if zealously pursued, said Rabbi Philip Frankel, spiritual leader of Congregation Shaarey Zedek. THE HOLIDAY is observed with an additional candle being lighted in the holiday candelabrum each night. Special prayers and songs, gift-giving and contributions to charity, reminders of the debt the people owe to the valor of freedom fighters of all ages, are all rehearsed in synagogue and home. pf Flint as principal speaker.
