246. HEDLUND'S As the political cold war seems to be melting, so is the stamp cold war, and thus more philatelic news from Communist countries is becoming available to U.S. collectors. Poland's Postal Department advises that a new set of eight stamps has been issued honoring the Polish Cavalry through the centuries. Each stamp depicts an equestrian soldier from a different period in Polish history.

Rise of the Spirit of Independence Historic Theme This 8-cent U.S. stamp, which gives further postal recognition to the Bicentennial of the American Revolution, will be issued Feb. 16 at Portland, in conjunction with the International Postage Stamp Exhibiiton. The stamp depicts a group of patriots, including a printer operating a hand press, and four companions commenting on a pamphlet he has just printed. Stamps in the News Route lustrates a cavalry hero from the Light Cavalry Regiment in 1939.

The 7 zl depicts a horseman from the Light Cavalry Regiment of the Polish Peo- ple's Army of 1945. A RECENT auction in New York of U.S. rare issues resulted in a total sale of 997.50. On sale were stamp items seldom seen at auction previously. Included were the 1 cent Blue Grill of 1867.

The only existing copy was last sold in 1917. This time is for $27,000 despite imperfections. Another rarity, the 30-cent carmine and blue of 1869 with flags inverted (used condition) brought $22,500. The catalog price is $20,000. This sale is evidence that the demand for fine, rare stamps continues and philatelists are willing to pay top dollar for items they desire.

CYPRUS HAS issued a new three val set and a souvenir sheet with the main design featuring the Nativity Wall painting in the Church of the Holy Cross of Agiasmati, near the village of Platanistasa, completed in 1466. Each of the three stamps depicts a portion of large painting. The 10 mils shows the bathing of the Child Jesus. The 20 mils illustrates The Nativity. The souvenir sheet features the whole painting.

FIJI HAS surcharged two of its regular issues to aid victims of Hurricane Bebe which caused widespread damage to the South Pacific island last fall. The 15-cent sun birds stamp now has added 5-cent surcharge and the 30-cent golden cowries shell stamp, a 10-cent surcharge. overprinted "Hurricane Relief." PATRICIA HALL Miss Hall Worthy Advisor Patricia Hall took office Saturday evening as worthy advisor of Lansing Assembly No. 11, International Order of Rainbow for Girls. Other officers installed in ceremonies at the Masonic Temple were: Marla Hatton, worthy associate advisor; Nancy Brauker, Charity; Amy Place, Hope; Kay Britton, Faith; Linda DeYoe, recorder; Cindy VanVlerah, treasurer; Renee Chrouch, chaplain; Candy Welch, drill leader; Linda Schaub, Love; Pam Ebersole, Religion; Lori VanBuskirk, Nature; Cheryl Smith, Immortality; Pam Wampler, Fidelity; Lori Roush, Patriotism; Keitha Ferguson, Service; Debbie McGinley, confidential observer; Linda VanBuskirk, outer observer; Diane Dietrich, musician; Leslie Roush, choir director; Joan Foren, associate drill leader; and Elaine Scribner, prompter.
