Well, if you're Turf Kauffman's Lansing All Stars, you spend Saturday night doing exactly hat you've done the past Saturday evenings playing football. Although the All Stars have a break from Midwest Football League action, where they are currently in first place with an 8-0 record, play an exhibition game at Dayton Saturday night. Dayton was originally in the Midwest Football League and on the All Stars schedule, but financial difficulties forced it out of the league. However, il kept a team and asked the All Stars to fulfill their commitment. The Lansing team needs only one more regular season win to clinch a second straight title.

However, a playoff system has been added this year, which has the first and third place teams playing each other and the second and fourth. Then, the two winners will meet for (he crown. Lansing's next game is at home, Oct. 10, against the Detroit Cowboys at Memorial Stadium. The All Stars normally played at Centennial Field (Everett's Stadium), but a high school game will be played there that night.

on WILS HOLLAND By TOM SALADINO Associated Press Sports Writer The Chicago Cubs are a little bit richer today thanks to Ferguson Jenkins and the Philadelphia Phillies got a lift from Oscar Gamble to escape the embarassment of the basement as the National League regular season came to a close. Jenkins, the Cub s' hard-throwing right-hander, mowed down the New York Mets Thursday night on a two-hitter, nailing down second place in the East by a game over the defending i champions with a 4-1 victory'. The second place finish is worth approximately $1,300 per man while third is worth $400. Jenkins, 22-6, a 20-game winner for four consecutive seasons, held the Mets hitless for six innings before Ken Singleton doubled opening the seventh. Singleton also doubled in the ninth.

The Cubs got a two-run single from Randy Hundley and Joe Pepitone's 26th homer, a two-run shot, in support of Jenkins, who struck out eight and walked two. See the New '71 EViNRUDE SNOWMOBILES Motor Homes 733 MICHIGAN AVE. HOLLAND 394-1461 Open Mon. thru Fri. 8:30 a.m.

The Super Selectron Society heads into this week's high school lineup with long faces. Last week's predictions produced a .552 percentage (16 wins, 13 losses).

But, never a team to quit, the Proud Prognosticators are back at it again in this third week of the season, hoping to make the boss smile and escape the dangers of facing those other "I told you so" experts. CITY East Lansing at SEXTON Big Reds still have long way to go to prove they've championship potential like last year but should have offensive edge to beat East Lansing, a team still looking for its first victory. Last year's 48-6 loss to Sexton should anger Trojans and defensively they have advantage. Take Sexton in close one. EASTERN at Battle Creek Central Quakers reeling off two consecutive victories and have score to settle with Bearcats from last season's 14-14 tie.

Eastern solid defensively and needs to get offensive unit in gear. Battle Creek has a tie and loss on record including 40-0 defeat to No. 1 ranked Bay City Central. But, we like Quakers' chances. GRAND RAPIDS CC at Everett With so many injuries, it's difficult to think Everett can handle last year's No.

2 ranked Catholic team. Even though Grand Rapids has struggled for its 1-1 record, Everett's manpower is at a limit and Vikings lack experience. GRAND LEDGE at Waverly Comets won West Central title last year and opened season in 1970 by beating Ionia. Waverly has only home field advantage because Comets will not be stopped by eager Warriors who are still sputtering on offense. Haslett at CATHOLIC CENTRAL Cougars of new Catholic Central zipped past Mason, 41-0 last Saturday and need big victory before heading towards Howell next week.

EXIT WILMINGTON, N.C. (UPI) "I don't think the people watching considered it spectacular because it wasn't, until you started adding it up," mused sandy-haired golfer Deane Beman. The short Bethesda, golfer fired an eight-under-par round of 63 Thursday to take a two-stroke lead into today's second round of the $60,000 Azalea Open golf tournament. Beman's round of 30-33 tied the course record at the 7,000 yard Cape Fear Country Club, and if Beman hadn't missed three birdie putts of five feet or less, he'd have broken the record. "It wasn't the best round I ever had, but it was an easy 63," he said.

"It wasn't one of those kind where you knock it in all the way across the green or chip it in." Beman said he was happy enough, however, because "normally, I'm not a strong starter."
