"I should claim my children as a business deduction," she observes. Carol had given no thought to writing theatrical movies. A friend recommended her to producer Ray Stark Girl," "Murder by who had become intrigued with quarter horse lore. Stark sent Mrs. Sobieski to the small town of Ruidoso, where quarter horse owners of the nation converge at summer's end for the All-American Futurity, the aggregate purse amounting to $1 million.

"I started writing in the coffee shop because I like to be around activity and it 's too quiet at home in the morning," she explains. "I work at home In the afternoon so I can be with the children: if 1 don't know what's going on, I get worried." IsCBttf i At Car gill Julia9 Touching, Well-Acted Movie By SHANNON CONN "Julia" is a haunting story of love, friendship, and heroism, and a period of history we are just beginning to view in perspective. Based on a part of Lillian Hellman's "Pentimen-to" "Julia" is an autobiographical remembrance of Miss Hellman's childhood friend who gave her life to fight Nazism in pre-war Europe. This film's most remarkable quality is the acting.

Vanessa Redgrave as Julia is flawlessly fragile and introspective, yet boldly brave and heroic a superb performance which earned her an Academy Award. Jane Fonda as Lillian, the struggling writer and best friend of Julia, is good, but just misses the quality of Miss Redgrave's performance by slightly overplaying her part. Jason Robards won an Academy Award for his sensitive portrayal of Dashiell Hammett, Lillian's companion of more than 30 years. This film also makes excellent use of two editing techniques a time frame and flashbacks. The whole movie is told through the narrative perspective of the older Lillian.

The film begins and ends with the same scene of the silhouetted Lillian fishing in a rowboat, remembering. And as she remembers her friend in the pre-war period, her memories flash back to the days they were children together, revealing both women's characters. "Julia" is a pensive movie not escapist fare and should be savored rather than gulped down quickly. It is a film well-acted and well-made. What a shame that a movie of this quality, which was released several months ago, is only now after the Academy Awards available to a city the size of Longview.
