Richie Hebner, Willie Stargell and Manny Sanguillen slugged the home runs that boosted the Bucs to a 5-3 victory over the Atlanta out of the basefor the first time this year. In Wednesday's other National League games, Cincinnati edged the Chicago Cubs 1-0, Houston swamped St.

Louis 9-4, Los Angeles defeated Philadelphia 6-1 and San Diego beat the New York Mets 4-3. Montreal's game at San Francisco was rained out. "TWO IN a row Wow! That's really a streak, isn't it?" Hebner said sarcastically after the victory. Hebner hit firstinning solo shot, Stargell la made it 3-0 in the fifth, the Braves got two runs in the sixth, one of them on Dusty Baker's homer, but Sanguillen wrapped it up in the eighth with a two-run clout. "Everybody on this club's got miebner of cold or virus," pointed out.

"I've just got a head cold. Other than that, my heart's beating and that's the main Stargell, also fighting a virus, added: "I think if we can play five or six games without getting rained out or something, it should help us. "MY HOMER really crawled out." he continued. "I hit it on the end of the bat. I don't care how far they go, though, as long as they get out." "Willie's been showing signs of lighting up in the last few days," said Manager a Danny Murtaugh.

The Bucs aren't only hitting the ball far. They're hitting it a lot. They slapped out 13 hits against the Braves to go with the 20 they rapped out in their 7-0 victory, Sunday over the Mets. we have to worry about Murtaugh said, "we're really in bad shape." Reds 1, Cubs 0 GEORGE FOSTER drew a bases-loaded, two-out walk from Bill Bonham in the bottom of the ninth inning to force home the only Cincinnati run-the one that beat Chicago. Dave Concepcion doubled, Cesar Geronimo drew an intentional walk, Terry Jack Billingham forced Crowley batted fora winner Concepcion at third, Pete Rose popped up, then Joe Morgan singled load bases and bring Foster to the plate.

The count went to 3-0, Bonham got a strike, then came the backbreaker. National League "I had the take sign on the 3-0." said Foster, "but when it was 3-1 I never looked for a sign. I felt Bonham would come across the plate around the letters and I made up my mind I was going to swing at the pitch was low and away." Astros 9, Cards 4 PITCHER DAVE Roberts slugged a two-run homer and Tommy Helms drove in four runs in the Astros' rout. Houston got four runs in the second inning against Lynn McGlothen on singles by Bob Watson, Milt May, Doug Rader and Helms and Roberts' shot to right. They got three more in the fourth, two Helms' double, and two more in the fifth on singles by Watson, Lee May, Milt May and Helms.

Reggie Smith drove in three St. Louis runs with a single, a grounder and his third homer of the season. "MAYBE I'VE been this high be after the second game of the season," grinned Helms, batting .360 after his 4-for-4 burst. "I'm sure this is as high as I've ever been this far along. Bike Flags MC THE STATE JOURNAL Apr. 25, 1974 C-7 Obituaries and Funeral Notices By BRUCE LOWITT Associated Press Sports Writer It's not exactly what you'd call a winning then, two in a row is better than nothing at all. The Pittsburgh Pirates, preseason picks to win the National League's East Division flag, have looked like anything but winners thus far this season. In fact, it took them 14 games before they could put victories back to back. runs to back Don Sutton's seven-hit pitching for Los Angeles.

season when Mike Schmidt singled for the Phillies' lone run in the seventh. SUTTON, 4-1, lost his bid for his second shutout of the Wynn singled home the Dodgers' first run in the opening inning, Los Angeles made it 2-0 in the second when Crawford singled, took third double by Steve Garvey ana3 scored on Bill Russell's grounder and Wynn hammered his seventh homer of the year in the third. Crawford's triple highlighted a three-run eighth. Padres 4, Mets 3 Nate Colbert slugged a two-run homer in the first inning, then broke a tie with a one-out, grounder in the ninth for the Padres, dumping the Mets into the East Division basement. Concluded from C-1 Michigan State and was more of a marginal player during his seasons on varsity in 1961-63.

"I wasn't anything super, that's for sure," Youngs said. YOUNGS WAS graduated in 1964 and came back in '65 to work on his master's degree. He also worked as a graduate assistant in football. The broad-shouldered, 32-year-old who putters around campus on a small Honda, got his first coaching job at Dayton, spending five years there in various positions on defense. In 1970 he went to Colorado State as the defensive line coach and then joined Duffy Daugherty's staff at MSU in 1971 as the linebacker coach.

HE WAS named the defensive coordinator when Stolz took over for the 1973 campaign. Defense has almost become a tradition at Michigan State, and Stolz constantly kicks around the word "program" where younger players can grow into starters while toiling behind experienced and talented veterans. "I think the tradition of sound defense being played at Michigan State started with the two great teams in the mid '60s," Youngs said. "They had just adopted two-platoon football again and MSU had a host of super defensive BUBBA SMITH, George Webster, Charlie Thornhill and Ron Goovert were some of the great players that led the Spartans to a 19-1-1 record in the two seasons. "Ever since then, Michigan State has had the reputation of playing good defense," Youngs said.

"And, that makes it a little easier to attract good defensive players. It's kind of like a circle. Hopefully, it'll keep on going." is a big factor in defense at Michigan State, according to Youngs. "A KID will work hard for two or three years before he gets his big chance," Youngs said. "He's played behind an outstanding man for a while and he's just as determined to do the Youngs is far from optimistic about the present squad's defensive fortunes right now.

The lack of depth just won't allow an injury to a key defensive player. "WE'VE NEVER been this thin in my three years at Michigan he said. "Without injuries, we'll have another good defensive crew although we are very young in the backfield. "We're not counting on any freshmen to step in as starters for us, but we do need help from them to give us depth." Youngs said that the only problem with having a tradition for defense is that "people come to expect it and can't figure out what went wrong if they don't get it." BUT, THAT only helps to make Youngs work harder making his players work harder. Saints Capture Golf Triangular Lansing Community beat runner-up Davenport CC by 10 Wednesday, winning a triangular match at Groesbeck Golf Course.

The Saints took first with a score of 303, followed by Davenport at 313 and Jackson CC The victory boosts the Saints record this season to 13- 3. Jim Sabin paced the field, taking medalist honors with a 72. Tom Mohre with a 74, Steve McConahy's 78 and Skip Hart's 79 rounded out the Saints' scoring. Bowling Green Beats Spartans Undefeated Bowling Green State University dealt Michigan State's lacrosse team an 8-0 defeat Wednesday afternoon, in a Midwest Lacrosse League match at Old College Field. Spartan Netters Host Notre Dame Michigan State's tennis team will host Notre Dame Friday and then travels to Central Michigan on Saturday.

Notre Dame always proves to be a worthy opponent in any competition with the Spartans. The Irish netmen are touted as one of the best in the midwest this season, according to Coach Stan Drobac. Central Michigan should be another tough match for the Spartans, especially with a home court advantage. After a slow start, State has bounced back now has a reof two wins and three losses. A pair of victories over the past weekend at Wisconsin and Northwestern gave State added confidence, Drobac said.

The Badgers fell victim 6-3 and the Wildcats 7-2. All five Spartan matches have been with Big Ten teams so far this season. Their opening three losses were to Iowa, Minnesota and Michigan. DEATHS FRYE, MR. GEORGE B.
