The News-Leader rFFh-in ----71 REGIONAL NEWS Man gets death for three killings Game for a game The Cape Girardeau deaths were drug-related, according to the defendant's guilty plea. The men demanded marijuana from Randy Scheper, 17, who sold them the drug. Roll then made Scheper and Scheper's other son, Curtis, 22, lie on the ground. Randy Scheper was fatally shot in the head, Curtis Scheper was stabbed three times in the back, and Sherry Scheper died of blows to the head. Co-defendants David Wayne Rhodes, 18, and John Browne, 21, both of Cape Girardeau, are serving life prison terms for the killings.

The Associated Press COLUMBIA A Cape Girardeau man has been sentenced to death in the 1992 drug-related killing of three members of a family. Gary Lee Roll, 41, was sentenced Tuesday by Boone County Circuit Judge Frank Conley. He had pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree murder in September, claiming he was high on LSD when he commit- 4B Thursday, November 18, 1993 ted the crimes. Prosecuting Attorney Morley Swingle said Roll and two friends entered the Cape Girardeau home of Sherry Scheper, 47, on Aug. 9, 1992.

They wanted to steal drugs from Scheper's youngest son, Swingle said. After cutting the phone lines, Roll persuaded Scheper to let him inside after he flashed a police officer's badge, which he had found in a park, Swingle said. CRIME Briefs KANSAS CITY Latest death may be link to interstate killer Man faces charges of counterfeiting Pit ih mm. aiesisiis KANSAS CITY A St. Joseph man was indicted by a federal grand jury Wednesday on charges that he passed and possessed counterfeit $100 bills.

Police searched his vehicle and allegedly found three more counterfeit $100 bills. CAPE GIRARDEAU Man found guilty of making bombs CAPE GIRARDEAU A southeast Missouri man was found guilty Wednesday of possessing pipe bombs, the U.S. Attorney's office said. Donald E. Clements, 40, was found guilty of two felony counts of possession of unregistered pipe bombs in a trial before U.S.

District Judge Stephen N. Limbaugh. Federal prosecutors say Clements sold elaborate pipe bombs he had made to an Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms undercover agent in October and November 1992. Clements faces a maximum punishment of 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. Sentencing is set for Feb.

3, 1994. Missouri, Kansas and Texas authorities are investigating the slayings of six women and one man. New York Times News Service WICHITA, Kan. Police in three states fear a recent slaying in Texas may mark a return by the so-called interstate serial killer. Missouri, Kansas and Texas authorities are investigating the possibility that a store clerk found shot in the head Nov.

1 in Arlington, Texas, may be the seventh victim of a killer who has eluded police for 19 months and who is believed to have last struck in May 1992. During a 30-day span ending in spring 1992, five women and one man died in similar slayings that officials suspected were the work of one person. Those killings took place in Raytown and St. Charles; Wichita; and Indianapolis and Terre Haute, Ind. "There are so many similarities that it's scary," Raytown Police Chief Kris Turn-bow said of the killing in Arlington.

"We're still dealing with a big if, but if they're connected, we're encouraged because this at least gives us a chance to finally get to the bottom of these killings. On the other hand, it means that after taking 18 months off, he's back out there." The killer's last known slaying was May 7, 1992, in Raytown when he shot Sarah Blessing, a clerk at a Raytown natural foods store, of Kansas City. Before that, the killer is believed to have slain Robin Fuldauer April 8 in Indianapolis; Patricia Smith and Patricia Magers April 11 in Wichita; Michael McCown April 27 in Terre Haute; and Nancy Kitz- miller May 3 in St. Charles. The Arlington killing fits his methods.

Amy Terna Vess, 22, was shot between 6 and 6:22 p.m., about closing time at Dancer's Closet, a dance supply store in a strip shopping center not far from Interstate 20. There were no witnesses, but Vess lived long enough to dial 911 and answer a few questions after police arrived. "The officers asked her if she'd been robbed, and she nodded yes," said Dee Anderson, Arlington Police Department spokesman. "They asked if the robber was a man, she nodded yes. They asked if she knew the man, she nodded no." The other killings were also at specialty stores in strip shopping centers, and always near major highways.

The motive always appeared to be robbery. In Wichita and Raytown, as in Arlington, the killer entered the store just before closing time. The killer always took his victims to back rooms, and his victims always looked similar. He always shot them in the back of the head with a gun. Microscopic marks on the casings of shells found at each of the murder scenes first convinced investigators the killings were related.

The marks showed the casings came from the same gun. Anderson said Arlington police are not releasing the caliber of the weapon used in Vess' death. He added that there is no definite link between the crime and the person who killed the six other persons. "The similarities between what happened here and in Arlington are striking," said Detective Richard Plummer of the St. Charles police.

"We're looking into the case, along with the other departments and the FBI and Arlington police. But we just don't know for sure yet." tau steve Pi Lian9Trie News-Leader "it great fOOtsau Weather," says Jason Hunt, front, 20.
