The Chieftains (8-0 Capital Circuit, 12-1-2 overall) blanked Charlotte (2-6, 4-8-1) for the second time this season as they fired 34 shots at Oriole keeper Aaron Payne. Charlotte had four shots on the Okemos goal. Also scoring for the Chieftains were Blake Richards, Steven Schurke and Nick Belloli.

Cullen and Belloli each registered assists. Lansing Catholic wins, 6-1 Mike Chemiawski scored three goals to lead Lansing Catholic to a 6-1 win over Jackson Northwest in the Capital Circuit soccer tournament. Bob Hillman had two goals and an assist and Brian Pettit had one goal for Lansing Catholic (4-2-2, 7-3-3). Hector Peris scored the goal for Jackson Northwest Brad Wever was in goal for Lansing Catholic and had four saves, while Jackson Northwest goalie Gabe Ce-dillo had nine saves. Lansing Catholic will play at Lakewood on Wednesday with the JV game starting at 4 p.m.

Eaton Rapids scores a bunch EATON RAPIDS The Eaton Rapids prep soccer team has a lethal offense. At least it did for the opening round of the Capital Circuit tourney on Monday. The Greyhounds rolled over Jackson Lumen Christi 7-1 and advanced to a Wednesday matchup against Charlotte on its home field. Doug Reaves had a pair of goals and an assist for Eaton Rapids while teammates Ben Rosier, Branden Tant, Russ Thorn, Cliff Wegner and Aaron DeGrow each scored one goal. Rich Rand scored the lone goal for Lumen Christi, which will play at Okemos on Wednesday.

Skating exhibition is Saturday EAST LANSING The Lansing Skating Club is presenting an ice skating exhibition at 8 a.m. on Saturday at Munn Ice Arena. The skaters will be skating their competitive programs in preparation for the upcoming regional competition, hosted by the Ann Arbor Figure Skating Club. Hettinger wins 7th race DEGRAFF, Ohio Midget auto racer Jim Hettiger of Mason earned his seventh NAMARS Auto Value win of 1997 at the Shady Bowl Speedway over the weekend. Hettiger led Dave Baumgartner the last 100 feet to take the checkered flag.

Berby finishes 38th OUACHITA NATIONAL FOREST, Ark. Ron Berby, 55, of Mason finished in 38th place at the Arkansas Traveler 100-mile trail run with a time of 28:48.11 on Saturday and Sunday. Only 49 of the 96 runners finished because of the extreme heat over the weekend. It was Berby's 18th run of more than 100 miles.
