2C News-Leader Tuesday, October 24, 2000 Page edited by Aaron Mendenhall; call 836-1118 after 6 p.m. the Fans' page Busy period for MIAA grid teams TVRadio TODAY BOWLING PBA: Flagship Open, at Erie, 7 p.m. -ESPN. 2, after eight years of junior college matches. The Mineral Water Bowl started a four-year run of high school activity in 1948, which I Marty Eddlemon Basketball briefs Moberly is ranked second only to College of Southern Idaho in a preseason junior college basketball poll.

Three Rivers of Poplar Bluff is No. 23 and SMS-West Plains also received some votes. Moberly is scheduled to open its season at North Arkansas in Harrison on Nov. 2. Laura Spanheimer, 5-9 guard from Omaha, plans to sign a letter of intent with Creighton, where her sister, Krissie, is a senior guard.

Kristina Meggers, 6-3 center from Rockford, 111., reportedly sought by Southwest Missouri State and Bradley, has committed orally to Drake. J.J. Sullinger, 6-5 guard from Worthington, Ohio, has announced he will sign with the University of Arkansas next month. Northwest Missouri State's remarkable winning streak, a return to the Mineral Water Bowl and plans for a renovation of Missouri-Rolla's athletic complex mark the current football season in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. It's hard to believe that the Bearcats of Maryville struggled through an 0-11 campaign just six years ago, coach Mel Tjeerdsma's first season at the helm.

-Since then, he's posted a 61-9 record with 33 straight league triumphs and an overall string of 21 victories, including two straight NCAA Division II championships. As usual, the MIAA has one of the best records in its division this season, winning 13 of the 20 non-league games on the schedule of the 10-team circuit. Post-season play not only will include the Division II title series, but a trip to the Mineral Water Bowl in Excelsior Springs. The town of 10,000 near Kansas City is returning to staging a collegiate bowl contest Dec. The new agreement with the Mineral Water Bowl calls for the highest-ranked non-playoff teams from the MIAA and the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Athletic Conference to collide.

The Northern Sun is a 10-team conference covering Minnesota and Wisconsin. The league doesn't have a clear-cut favorite. Bemidji (Minn.) State, Concordia of St. Paul Winona State and Northern State are tied for first with one loss apiece. Groundbreaking ceremonies were held earlier this month for Missouri-Rolla's new project.

A $1.5 million pledge by Keith and Pat Bailey of Tulsa is to be used for the renovation with the complex dedicated to retired Miner coach Dewey Allgood. Keith Bailey, chairman of The Williams Companies, is a 1964 graduate ofUMR and played football and basketball under All-good. The latter also coached track and cross country for the Miners in a 40-year career before retiring in 1990. To be named the Allgood- Bailey Complex, the facilities will include lights for night games, an all-weather track and a new restroomconcession building. The football field, in use since 1967, will retain the name "Jack-ling Stadium." It honors metallurgist Daniel Jackling, an 1892 graduate.

Upgraded facilities also have been or are being constructed at five other league schools. Touchdown Tony Rockhurst High School not only is starting its first freshman football player on the varsity this fall but he's the leading scorer on the state's top-ranked Class 5A squad. In fact, tailback Tony Temple may develop into the Kansas City area's top prep athlete ever. He could become a starter in basketball as a ninth-grader. He first dunked as a S-foot-6 forward in the seventh grade.

An honor-roll student, he's also likely to be a four-year letter-man in track. He's already running the 40-yard dash in 4.4 seconds. was ended by Missouri State High School Activities Association regulations against post-season action on the gridiron. The city's Quarterback Club then moved its project onto the college level and hosted top college division clubs through 1975. Included were two appearances by Southwest Missouri State, which ran into a pair of future professional stars in losing 21-14 to Northern Illinois in 1963 and 14-8 to Adams State in 1966.

Northern was led by George Bork, quarterback who went on to star in the Canadian League. Kicker Don Cockroft was Adams State's ace and signed with the Cleveland Browns immediately after the game. BASEBALL MLB: World Series, Game 3, N.Y. Yankees at N.Y. Mets, 7 p.m.
