WORLD SERIES CAME SIX; TORONTO 4, ATLANTA 3 ip 0 mmui iBmnii imw it 1 i Exporting World Series: Blue Jays end years of frustration with clinching victory in Atlanta. The Associated Press ATLANTA There's a new flag flying over Canada the World Series pennant. The Toronto Blue Jays took baseball's championship outside the United States for the first time ever, beating the Atlanta Braves 4-3 in 11 innings Saturday night in Game 6.

After surviving more ninth-inning magic from the Braves, the Blue Jays won it when Dave Winfield's first World Series extra base hit scored two runs with two out. Frantic finish: Winfield's winner came after another frantic finish by the Braves like their ninth-inning comeback against Pittsburgh in the playoffs. But this time it fell just short, tying the game but not winning it. It all ended in the city where it began a few days ago with a flag flap. And, Toronto's big win resulted in an even bigger loss for the Blue Jays finally and forever, they've lost their label as big-game losers.

The Braves, meanwhile, became the first team to lose consecutive World Series since the 1977-78 Los Angeles Dodgers, and for the second straight year lost despite outscoring their AL opponent. Atlanta lost 1-0 in Game 7 to Minnesota last year and, lost all four games in this Series by one run. Atonement time: The 11th inning came down to a battle for atonement between Win-field, still hounded by his l-for-22 performance in the 1981 World Series, against Charlie Leibrandt, who gave up Kirby Puckett's home run that won Game 6 for Minnesota last year. Devon White was hit by a pitch with one out, Roberto Alomar singled and Joe Carter flied out.

With the runners going on a 3-2 pitch, Winfield grounded a double between third baseman Terry Pendleton and the bag to score both runs, his first extra base hit in 44 Series at-bats. The Associated Press Pat Borders was nailed at home on a throw from Deion Sanders to Damon Berryhill, but all still was well for the Blue Jays, who won the World Series with a 4-2, 11-inning win. cmj moments in scary win Steelers (4-2) HIMI.U'i JWUjW.ilWl.l.lliUli.WUl AUTO RACING Tight race for Winston Cup continues ROCKINGHAM, N-C. By Lyndal Scranton The News-Leader Since the first workout on that hot August afternoon, the Southwest Missouri State Bears have prided themselves on unity. "We just have a great group of guys who care about one another," SMS quarterback Cleveland Antoine said earlier this week. "We pull for each other, pick each other up when someone is down." That closeness was put to the ultimate test during Saturday's 13-10 over Eastern Illinois. The Bears passed barely.

Tearful win: The Bears shed a few tears on the way to this win. Ken Whittaker, making his first career start at quarterback, scrambled for an 18-yard gain with about seven minutes left in the third quarter. But as he reached the Eastern Illinois 27, Whittaker took a ferocious hit from Shavez Hawkins to the back of his head. "I ran over to help him up," Bears offensive tackle Matt Irvin said, "and reached my hand to him and said, 'Hey, great Then it was very scary." Whittaker had gone into convulsions. Medical personnel streamed onto the field.

Some insurance: Kansas City signs veteran kicker Eddie Murray for tonight's home game against the Steelers. The Associated Press KANSAS CITY If the Chiefs need a kick start tonight, they might not be able to rely on Nick Lowery to give it to them. The veteran kicker, the most accurate in NFL history, is listed as questionable for tonight's game against Pittsburgh because of a groin injury. The Chiefs had considered using running back Christian Okoye on kickoffs and have Lowery doing placement kicks. Aggravated Sunday: Lowery, who has made 79.6 percent of his field goal attempts in his career, sustained the injury in practice several weeks ago and aggravated it kicking off in the Chiefs 17-10 loss Sunday in Dallas. Murray spent all 12 years of his career with the Detroit Lions, but was waived April 29. Murray has made 76.1 percent of his kicks, fourth on the all-time list.

Frustrating habit: All season Missouri has played teams close, but come up short. Saturday was no different. By Anna McKie For The News-Leader COLUMBIA It's becoming a habit for Missouri: start slow, fight back, get close but lose. Saturday the Tigers pulled the stunt against Nebraska, losing 34-24 to go 1-6 on the season. So close, yet "We can smell dinner, we just can't get to it," junior center Matt Burgess said.

"If we had the answer, I don't think we would be 1-6." Missouri is 0-3 in the Big Eight and lost to Nebraska for the 14th straight time. The No. 8 Cornhuskers (5-1, 2-0) jumped to a 14- 0 lead in the first quarter on two rushing TDs by true freshman quarterback Tommie Frazier. Bounced back: Missouri bounced right back, tying the score on sophomore quarterback Jeff Handy's 13-yard touchdown pass to sophomore tight end A.J. Ofodile.

That set the tone the Tigers throwing, the Cornhuskers running. How extreme was it? Handy threw for 424 yards in his second start, while the Tigers rushed for 22 yards. The Cornhuskers meanwhile had 335 yards on the ground. Handy completed 29 of 44 passes, all season bests against Nebraska. It was his second consecutive week to throw over 400 yards as he secured his starting position over junior Phil Johnson.

Hail to Handy: "If you can't throw the ball downfield against man-to-man coverage when they're blitzing, it's going to be a long day," Stull said. "Jeff is playing extremely well." Nebraska went on to a 24-14 halftime lead. The Tigers fought back to trail 27-24, but a diving touchdown by Frazier on fourth and 5 with 2:09 remaining sealed the victory. Praise for MU: "If we kick the field goal, we're up six. That's nice, but MU moved the ball quite well at times," Nebraska coach Tom Osborne said.

"MU is a much improved team." "The only reward we get is wins, but there's no doubt we're improved. The last two years we were beat by 50 points by this group," MU coach Bob Stull said. "That's a team we haven't even come close to before. By halftime we might as well have grabbed a hot dog and gone home." Statistics, 2C in rffl irH iitiri if iijfH fir. jib JW.
