IS It ft f4l'h expected opponent, Republican Sen. John Ashcroft Carnahan accused Ashcroft of telling Missourians he supports prescription drug benefits for seniors, then voting against them. He also took aim at Ashcroft's proposal to use budget surpluses "on massive tax cuts for the wealthy instead of spending them on Social Security." "Mel Carnahan's speech in St.

Louis was full of partisan falsehood," said Ashcroft spokesman David James. "John Ashcroft has a superb record of protecting every dollar of Social Security for seniors."
