I'm still a learn-er." He has the look of a young learner, too, which led his wife, Gia, to suggest he grow a mustache to set him apart. "I've got some experience. I'm not fresh out of college," Moreland says and laughs.

"But I blend." The first syllabus of Moreland's teaching career begins with his guiding principle one he says applies to teachers as much as students. Then the young teacher flashes a wry smile: the verse is the epistle of Paul the Apostle describing the duties of servants in Colossians 3:23: "With sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord, whatever you do, put all your heart and soul into it, working for the Lord, not for men. It is the Lord Christ himself that you are serving." His course mission and description follows that. Moreland explains: "As a teacher and as a person of the real world, that verse is my theme. It puts life in perspective.

It's about having character and being motivated to a higher a probe into the alleged misuse of funds. Byrd fired the marshals, but the judges reinstated them. The council then impeached the judges. Both factions met with federal officials Friday but were unable to reach an agreement After the meeting, U.S. Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt alluded to possible congressional action.

U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe, a figure in the dispute, would prefer President Clinton, not Congress, intervene in the matter. Mankiller, who served three terms as the tribe's chief, said the Cherokee Nation's current problems stem from inexperienced leadership. "You just have the luck of the draw when you're in elected politics," she said.

The tribe has grown immensely, but members' idea of good leadership hasn't changed to take that growth into account, she said. By Jennifer Barnett News-leader There is one exception Wilma Mankiller makes to her customary involvement in all aspects of community life. The former chief of the Cherokee Nation said she tries her best to stay out of the turmoil that has plagued the tribe in the two years since she left office. "It's hard not to be involved," she said Sunday before she spoke at Southwest Missouri State University's New Student Convocation. "I've tried to move back and let the new leadership emerge." The tribe's current chief, Joe Byrd, has been locked in a battle with members of the Judicial Appeals Tribunal, all of whom were impeached by the Tribal Council earlier this year.
