8d Sunday, November 1, 1987 SPORTS The News-Leader The News-1 radcr For home delivery call 836-1 22 or I BOO-49P-4B03 TEAM UP WITH THE LEADER Linebacker Braden runs to glory 2U Braden caught a pass thrown directly at' him by Illinois State's freshman quarterback Brad Fuller and returned it down the sideline, diving over two Redbird players into the end zone. The final dive, Braden said, was inspired by a play former Arkansas star Gary Anderson of the San Diego Chargers made last Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs. "As I was running I was thinking of watching Gary Anderson when he scored his touchdown, when he dived from the five, and I just said 'Hey, I'm determined to get into the end Braden said. "It was my regular drop, but I played the receiver. When he scooted over, I scooted over and he (Fuller) just threw it to me." The play helped break the game open, giving SMS a 23-9 lead.

"We seemed to move the ball well at times, but the interception was the big play for them in the second half," Illinois State head coach Bob Otolski said. Braden and Matt Soraghan have formed what is considered by many to be the best linebacker tandem in the Gateway Conference. But the Braden left the game early, experiencing lower back spasms. "I hurt it the other day in practice, and I thought the pain would just go away," Braden said. "In pregame I felt it a little bit, and didn't think anything of it.

But the first series it felt like something snapped. I went and got some ther-aphy, some heat. I just came back, sucked up and played." But Braden didn't appear to be in two much pain the second half. "No, as a matter of fact, it seemed like when I landed in the end zone and they jumped on my back, that's when it started feeling better," Braden said. Braden, from- Memphis, scored a touchdown on a 41-yard interception return against Central Missouri State as a freshman.

He scored the only touchdown in SMS' 10-6 upset at Jackson State last year, running an interception back 65 yards. "From the first time I came here I always wanted to play fullback," Braden said. "So I have a personal goal that every interception I get I'd try to return for a touchdown." kT Jkg By Ron Sylvester The News-Leader Linebacker Ken Braden said he always envisioned himself as a running back. But while developing into one of the top linebackers in the Gateway Conference, the Southwest Missouri State "senior has fulfilled dreams of scoring touchdowns. Braden returned a pass interception to the end zone for the third time in his four seasons at SMS, this one going 30 yards to help the Bears beat Illinois State 31-15 Saturday at Briggs Stadium.

"It looked like a fullback running out of the wishbone," SMS offensive coordinator Johnnie Mac Hollinger told Braden after the game. Taylor backs up his bragging; MU impressed By Joe Mueller The News-Leader COLUMBIA Oklahoma's Ja-melle Holieway has been the all-Big Eight quarterback for the past two years. After Nebraska's 42-7 win over Missouri on Saturday at Faurot Field, a Cornhusker said he's the best quarterback in the conference. "I think I am; I know I am," Nebraska junior Steve Taylor said. "There is no comparison between Jamelle Holieway and me.

I am faster and quicker than he is and I throw better. I feel I'm the best quarterback in the Big Eight." Taylor passed for four touchdowns and ran for another on Saturday. He carried 14 times for 75 yards and completed eight passes for 139 yards. "He's a great quarterback and he played the perfect game," Missouri defensive back Adrian Jones said. "He was able to scramble when he needed to for big plays.

His passing kept us off the whole day." "He's as good a football player as we have played against," Missouri coach Woody Widenhofer said. "I don't know who is vying for the Heisman Trophy, but I'm sure he has to be considered." Taylor is thinking about the Oklahoma game right now, not the Heisman. The second-ranked Cornhuskers play the top-ranked Sooners on Nov. 21 at Norman. "We're the better team and we're going to prove that this year," Taylor said.

"We were the better team last year, but they got the breaks. It might not even be close this year." 39 $40oo $4300 $4400 $70oo $70oo $70oo $7500 $7500 70 $70oo $7500 $7500 8500 P20575R15 P21575R15 P22575R15 P23575R15 27850R14 28850R15 29950R15 30950R15 311050R165 29950R15 29950R15 30950R15 311050R15 L23585R16 SBR WL SBR WL SBR WL SBR WL Grabber AP LW Grabber AP LW Grabber APLW Grabber AP LW Grabber AP LW Grabber AT LW Grabber MT LW Grabber MT LW Grabber MT LW 10PAM Steel AS Lisa FingerThe News-Leader I Ml Evangel tailback Drew Smith (21) hits the turf as Southwest Baptist's Kerry Reed applies the finishing touches to the second-half kickoff Satur- day at Kennedy Stadium. "This was really a discouraging loss," Brandt said. "We moved up one place last week by beating SEMO (Southeast Missouri), now we lose to a Division I (NAIA) team and we will drop out of it.

All the pollsters know is wins and losses and we have three losses." Price, who hit 14 of 29 for 269 yards, was intercepted five times and it appeared the turnovers would keep the Crusaders out of the victory column. Instead, EC's, inspired defensive play turned the game around. The 54-yard strike from Price to Feazell came on the first play after cornerback Otis Calhoun intercepted SBU's Brad Coy and returned the ball 23 yards. The Bearcats, who led 7-0 at the time, had gotten the ball on linebacker Mark Cutts' interception on the previous play. SBU scored on the first series of the game on a 5-yard Coy to Willie Brown pass, followed by the first of three Rob Harris conversion kicks.

Harris was short on a 54-yard field intercepted for the fifth, time by Hayward, his second of the day. But the Bearcats had lost Coy with an apparent clavicle injury. They got a first down for new quarterback Heath Kuykendall, but a delay penalty hurt them. Then Charles Johnson sacked Kuykendall for a 6-yard loss, one of seven solo tackles for the 270-pound freshman from Central High School who's playing with a broken right hand. Stopped at their 43, the Bearcats saw Doug Brandt's punt go only 17 yards.

Two plays later, it was the Price-to-Feazell show again. "Coach (Keith) Barefield and I had talked about it with 59 seconds left," Schroeder said. "We knew we needed to go deep, and we both felt that James could beat them. He caught two like that last week and two more this week The Crusaders wound up with 10 tackles for losses, led by end Jim Brown with four. Linebacker Bobby Thomas was credited with 15 tackles, 13 solo.

Feazell's two TD catches ran his two-year total to 10, breaking the former EC record of nine by Jon Ferguson in 1977-78. goal attempt later in the first quarter, so Feazell's first TD tied the score. Harris also was wide on a 32-yard field goal try early in the second quarter. Coy scored on a 5-yard run early in the third period, but EC's Kirk Spain booted a 31-yard field goal to make it 14-10. Evangel then drove 74 yards in six plays to score on tailback Drew Smith's 1-yard dive and take a 17-14 lead.

Price hit end Wes Welch for a 42-yard gain on the march and Smith ran 16 yards on a misdirection play to the 1. Then came an SBU go-ahead scoring drive that EC coach Dave Schroeder said would have discouraged some defenses. The Bearcats marched 80 yards to score on tailback Lester Baker's 8-yard sweep of left end after taking a pitch just as Coy was tackled. Coy had four pass completions in the series, two to Dalton Vann for a total of 36 yards. "That was a great drive for them, and that might have discouraged some defenses, but we hung in there and got the ball back again," Schroeder said.

Chris Drennan kicked the first of six extra points to give the C6rn-huskers a 7-0 lead. Banderas caught touchdown passes of 9 and 4 yards and wing back Dana Brinson caught a 29-yard scoring pass in the second quarter. Banderas beat freshman linebacker Ron Walters, who was making his first start, on his first touchdown and was uncovered on the second catch.

"The defense didn't count off at the line and I was open," Banderas said. "All I had to do was get a step behind the defense. That's all it takes." Quarterback John Stollenwerck led the Tigers on a six-play, 80-yard scoring drive late in the first half. Robert Delpino scored on a 1-yard run and Tom Whelihan kicked the extra point to cut Nebraska's lead to 28-7. The Cornhuskers punted for the first time from the Nebraska 9 on their next possession.

Cornerback Pat Ray blocked John Kroeker's punt and the ball bounced out of bounds at the 3. Two plays later, Stollenwerck fumbled near the goal line and Broderick Thomas recovered. Missouri didn't come close to scoring again. Ronnie Cameron replaced Stollenwerck in the second half and third-string quarterback Jeff Henningsen replaced Cameron in the fourth. "They didn't have us out-manned," Stollenwerck said.

"We could have easily moved the ball. But it was a Combination of us beating ourselves and a tough defense. This was the worst game I have played in my life." Taylor scored on a 22-yard run in third quarter and Banderas 'caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from Clete Blakeman in the fourth quarter to give Nebraska a 35-point lead. "Missouri has a pretty good team, but they have to decide what they want to do," Taylor said. "They have to stop the run or the pass." mm BLACK WINE Leather Slip on tassel moc.
