"It "was in charge of Mrs. L. W. Munger, and was given between the hours of 4 and 5 o'clock. The tea was given for; the purpose of increasing the interest in the work of the organization.

Each member was given permission to invite a friend. In all there were about fifty present and the officers of the society feel much encouraged by the result of their energies in--this direction. Dr. E. W.

Bing of Second and Morris streets, South Chester, lately secured a large and valuable collection of Indian pottery and arrow heads, dug from the mounds of Kentucky and Missouri. Among his collection are also several specimens of Indian tomahawks, stone hatchets, idols and rare shells and stones. He has also a well preserved jaw bone of a male Indian, which still has several of the teeth as firmly imbedded as when its owners roamed the forests. The excessive heat yesterday was hard on horses and a number of cases of prostration were reported. Hanum and Fulmer, the Market street liverymen, lost their big gray horse "Bobbie," which died early this morning, fromj the effects of the heat.

The animal was hired early in the morning to H. B. Bry- son'of Broad and Morton ave- nue, who drove to Philadelphia. He returned the team to the stable during the night and the horse expired about three hours later. Mr.

Bryson drove carefully, he says. "Bobbie was a valuable animal." 50 YEARS AGO The campaign for the fifty thousand dollar fund for improvements to St. Rose of Lima Church, in which the faithful members of that parish are endeavoring to raise under the direction of the pastor, Rev. Thomas F. Ryan is growing apace.

The work of collecting funds is on for ten days and ten teams as well as the executive committee and individual mem bers feel highly encouraged so far. Yesterday's total reached $3027.00 while in the three days of effort the grand total has been $14,146.50. That is considered splendid even by those nol interested in showing what St. Rose of Lima's people can do and what a sympathetic public is willing to do for the church that is developing so wonderfully in a rapidly growing community. Among those who contributed one hundred dollars yesterday are the following: Mrs.

Thomas J. Robinson, Dempsey Brothers, Thomas Kelly, William Connor, in memory of his deceased mother; Hugh MacAtee, Francis Hitchcock, Patrick Multahey, John J. McCoy, Michael Dougherty anc Mrs. Julia Hassen, in memory of her husband and John B. McCleary.

Furthermore, its officials contend residents of the 31-mile stretch from Wawa to Oxford have "adequate" bus service. Upwards of 100 residents of the area affected heard this testimony from the railroad officials in the court house in Media before J. A.

Eiseman, examiner of the Public Utility lommission, on Wednesday. Testimony from them, oppos- ng the stoppage of the train service, will be heard at some uture undetermined date. The railroad's chief witness was A. J. Greenough, superintendent of the Maryland Division of which the Octoraro Branch is a part.

He offered timetables, show- ng that there were two trains daily each way between Oxford and -Wawa. At the latter point junction is made with the electrical line between Philadelphia and West Chester. During a test period last January it was shown by records presented by Greenough there was a daily average of 152.2 passengers on the entire branch, jroducing an average daily revenue of $32.77. Another check, made less than two weeks ago, showed a daily average of 125.8 passengers. Last year the railroad superintendent testified the operating costs totaled $40,697.72 and the total revenue was $10,455.27, showing a loss of $30,272.45, on the passenger, express and mail service.

It was estimated that the operating loss this year will be larger. Dummy's queen lost to East's king and South had to ruff with his last trump.

Then South entered dummy with the ace of diamonds and tried the club finesse. West took his king and set the hand with his heart tricks. "I work a finesse, moaned South. "You didn't this time," said West, "but you chucked the hand anyway. You should have submarined the trumps by leading low from your You would ruff the second heart, go to dummy, try and lose me club finesse and still make the hand because I would have had no chance to pull your last little trump." "When I want my partner educated, I'll teach him," saic North.

"West could have beaten the hand against my line of play." "Want to bet?" said West. "Sure I do," replied North. "If South leads a low spade at trick two it is up to West to go up with the queen or king and lead either the nine or eight of diamonds. This will give him time to establish a diamond trick before South has the opportunity to discard two of dummy's diamonds on his long clubs." i Krwanis to Meet CHESTER The Chester Ki-j wanis Club will hold its weekly) luncheon meeting at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Central YMCA, 2 S.
