The News-Leader Monday, February 1, 1993 3B OZARKS MISSOURI Riverboat roulette Offbeat Ode celebrates Groundhog Day and made a wish list from each one. "Then I went to show Judy my list and explained to her how each item is absolutely necessary if she expects me to catch fish. She can roll those fishing lists into mmmm J. i rim U- i the tightest little paper balls you ever saw." Jim Hamilton, editor and publisher of The Buffalo Reflex, paid tribute to another catalog in his column last week: VT" v- -isk Hank Billing 5j ir f- Offbeat's Ode of the Week, courtesy of Bill Wadley, Kimberling City, and celebrating Tuesday's Groundhog Day: Would Chuck A foot and a half of blackish gray Turning to chestnut red, Coarse hair and and long whiskers Adorn a broad flat head. Has he a calendar in his burrow, This hibernating pest, Causing us to ponder his prediction When rousing from his rest? No value of food or fur Yet we anxiously await And if his shadow isn't seen We wish he'd estivate.

Outdoors note from "Only in the Ozarks," by T.E. "Ted" Larimer in last week's Green Forest, Tribune: "Saturday afternoon, while looking over the flower beds, I was surprised to see a number of flowers already poking their heads above ground. All three mum beds have mums about an inch or so high. I guess we have not had that severe a winter after all. I have just taken it hard." Stan White does some spring daydreaming in last week's "From Here to There" for The Crane ChronicleStone County Republican: "It's slowly but surely heading toward spring.

For some it's seed catalogs that mark the season, but for me it's fishing catalogs I've got four so far, and I sat right down dogeared and crumpled, with Christmas wishes marked throughout "The Wish Book' was many a youngster's Christmas list, as much a part of the season as Santa himself. It's hard to imagine preparing for Christmas without it, but we will. "Sears Roebuck announced this week it is quitting the catalog business, 97 years after the first book went out in the mail "Where will little boys and girls turn to fuel their Christmas morning fantasies? How will they ever make Christmas lists without the Wish Book to remind them of the hundreds of things they want Santa to bring? "With the passing of rural America passes one of its richest traditions. More than a book, the Sears Roebuck catalog was a farmhouse fixture for nearly- a century. "For generations hard-pressed by reality, it was a door to fantasies and an invitation to dream a 'wish book' for all ages and seasons." Gary Sosniecki, co-publisher; of Seymour's Webster County Citizen, poses a question in last week's "Soz Sez" column: "Don't you find' it ironic that propane prices went up the same week that Attorney General Bill Webster left office?" Hank Billings is editorial page coordinator of The News-Leader.

"Many Christmases I can recall whicn arrived without snow; others I remember I spent far away from my Ozarks home. "But none; warm or cold, near or far from the hearth, arrived unannounced by the Sears Roebuck mail order catalog. "The 'Wish as the Christmas catalog was called, arrived even before that season's frosty nights, and in the months and weeks before Santa's annual ride, our two girls spent hours thumbing through its pages.
