September 13, 1995 Page edited by Amy Geisler call 836-1187 after 6 p.m. THE FANS' PAGE Teal hunting to heat up as season winds down TvRadio There were 57 teal hunters at Missouri Department of Conservation headquarters Saturday morning at the Schell-Osage Conservation Area in anticipation of the 5:30 a.m. drawing, i Scattered flocks of blue-winged teal, spurred by a cool front from the north, had moved into the area earlier in the week. Schell-Osage teal habitat is about as good as you can get when there's enough water and cool weather to before 5 a.m. an equal chance at some shooting opportunities.

Hunters shot 109 teal. There was no drawing on Sunday, but self-registration cards recorded 44 hunters shooting 26 teal The hunting has slowed down, MDC personnel at the area say, with only a few teal harvested Monday and Tuesday. Usually, the hunting gets better late in the second week and during the final weekend. The season ends this Saturday. While a marsh can be devoid of teal one day, a cool front combined with rising water levels and strong winds from the north and west can produce enough migrating flocks for good shooting.

Whether that happens the final few days of this short nine-day season remains to be seen. Teal easy to fix While corn-fed mallards usually garner the most accolades as the best-eating ducks, I rank teal as culinary equals or better. Granted, teal have less breast meat than drake mallards. But they surpass larger ducks in tenderness and texture. I field dress and cook teal just like doves, utilizing only the skinless whole breast that I baste with olive oil.

Enough thick-sliced bacon strips are tooth-picked to the meat for total coverage. Elevate the grill or wait long enough for coals to burn down before grilling. Because bacon drippings flare, a grill too low or a fire too hot scorches the meat Slow, even cooking is the best The breasts can be eaten like corn on the cob. They are tender and delicious and a feast fit for the fa mily when served with a wild and long-gniiicu rice combination and a home-grown garden salad. Four Rivers teal update MDC's Four Rivers Conservation Area, near Rich Hill off Missouri 71 south of Kansas City, has the potential to be one of the best duck hunting spots in the state.

If it only had water. I called last week to find out if the long-promised water pump was working that would fill the shooting pools with calf-high liquid. This area gets its name from the Little Osage, Marmaton and Marais des Cygnes (mare-da-zene) rivers that come together there to form the Osage River. Members of the Osage Native American tribe once lived in this prime hunting area. Many duck hunters know the area as a prime migratory bird flyway.

Unfortunately, the lady on the phone had bad news. Becauseof enduring spring rains and exceptionally high water, installing the pump that would suck up river water and guarantee a steady supply of water in the marsh was impossible. She told me it was so bad there in spring and early summer that some of the construction equipment was lost and damaged. Now, however, even though the four rivers snake in and out of the immediate area, the marsh is basically dry. A wet fall could dramatically improve duck hunting opportunities before the regular middle zone duck season opens Nov.

4. White bass at Stockton Fishing tip of the week: Head to Stockton Lake. Fish the main channel points receiving the breeze early morning and afternoon. Fly fishermen are catching white bass on l80th and 100th ounce chartreuse jigs. Spin fishermen use small Rebel Pop-Rs and Roostertails (gray, white, chartreuse) for wade fishing.

Charlie Farmer is a free lance outdoors writer who lives in Ozark. His column appears Sunday and on alternate Wednesdays. Cl.2r.lt Fanner move and hold birds. As in past seasons, hunters outnumbered ducks on opening Saturday when yvater, cool weather and ducks were in short supply. The drawing was held to distribute hunters throughout the shooting pools for the sake of safety and to give most of the 57 hunters who arrived well Latest Line For up-to-minute scores, dial The News-Leader's SPORTS HOTLINE at 1-900-773-6000.
