Fresldent Iladltr Speaks ot the Design ot the New Commemorntlve Hall. New Haven. Dec 14. President Itodley ot Yale University has given additional Information about the fu)uro building plana of the university, lie says: "The question of most prominence In Yale men's minds at this time Is the bicentennial. Last spring the Yale Corporation, being aasured cf the co-operation of alumni, chose for the site of the commemorative building the ground at the corner of Grove and College streots.

diagonally opposite the Sheffield SclenUfle School. The choice was Influenced by several reasons. There was plenty of room there for growth In the future, for' we are planning not alone for the Yale of today, but (or toe Yale of (Uty years hence. Again, the new buildings which will stand between the academic and scientific departments are meant to be part of the new university, In which all shall co-operate. "The site chosen, tbe leading architects in the county were asked to draw plans for tbe buildings, and they drew some Inspiring ones, indeed.

The trouble was that they all called for 51,000 000. Those architects whose plans seemed the most sultablo when considerable remodelling was dono were Carrcre A Hastings of New York, and the award was made two weeks ago. The remodelling Is slow work, in general however, the main buildings on the west side ot College street will hate an auditorium sumeieutly large to ecal 3,000 people. Tho scats will be arranged so that they can bo removed and the hall used for tbe promenade or for an examination On the Grove street side wo have plans for a dining room which shall scat 1.600, and facilities for Mrvlng better dinners than are given in Alumni Hall. The plans given by architects, even when they shall have been remodelled, are Imposing, and, when carried out.

we shall ono of the noblest examples of college architecture in thn whole civilized world On the matter of money with which to carry on the work.l'resldcnt lladley said that, generous though the subscriptions had been, he thought It very unlse to "start on a 500,000 building with only $160,000 In pocket" Nevertheless, he added, "we base faith that the building will be carried through, though faith will not at all times cash checks. It would be a great misfortune. In my estimation, to build an Inferior building. On this ZOOlh anniversary of the founding of tbe college the structure raise should last a thousand years. Whatever means we take to procure funds for the work, monev will not be drawn away which Is needed nnd should be used In Instruction, fnr the building, though a noble luxury.

Is still a luxury The pursuit of such a course would mean that we were false to the principles of Yale democracy Trlncetnn. at her 150th annierary, raised a million and a half dollars, and I feci confident that Yale will surpass that achievement and give to the univesrlty the building which wilt make a great increase for university Hie We hae delayed asking for support until the plans are all In hand." In speaking of the proposed botanical garden at Yale. President Iladlev said- "The late Prof Marsh left bis property to Yale with th hope that a botanical garden would be established The gift, howeier. did not carrv enough money with It to establish such a garden, and much doubt has Ix-en fell ua to whether It was a gon.1 thing to attempt It. but 1 bellerp that wc ought to have it Wr nerd S20O.OOO to make a first-class garden, and 5100,000 more to add a school of forcstrr Yale has two graduates of recent years Gilford Plnchott, '80.
