"He can be an ail-American. Maybe the best in the country." LEE CORSO, Indiana coach, also had praise for Hicks. "I thought we should have scored in the first half," he said, "but their linebacker made a helluva play." Hicks missed spring practice because of a shoulder separation.

Michigan State quarterback Charlie Baggett was named the AP's offensive player of the week. BAGGETT COMPLETED only four passes in a 41-7 rout of Northwestern but two of them were for touchdowns of 57 and 44 yards and another 44-yard completion set up a touchdown. Baggett also picked up 64 yards rushing including a three-yard touchdown sweep. 14 10 NATIONAL CONFERENCE Eastern Divsien Dallas 1 0 0 1.000 CI I Halt I A A 1 AAA Et. Hicks, a 21-year-old, 6-foot-3. 235-pound senior from Villa Park, was credited with 17 tackles, 16 of them solos. HICKS STOPPED four consecutive power, slashes by Indiana from inside the four-yard line. "I had all four plays read all the way," said Hicks. "But to tell the truth, I was surprised they ran all four plays up the middle like they did.

We were confident we could keep them from scoring." "He's a hell of an enthusiastic kid," he said. "He jumped up and down when he got the touchdown like a high school kid." Elzinga's football future was clouded in the winter of 1972 when the 6-foot-3, 195-pounder was shot in an incident outside after a high school basketball game in Bay City. The .22 caliber slug entered his passing arm and lodged in his back. It did not hit any bones.

"I was in the hospital for two days. I didn't throw anything for a month," Elzinga said. "It was winter and there wasn't much I could do anyway." That didn't stop colleges from trying to recruit him. HE SAID he spent time at the campuses of Kent State, Central Michigan.
