Thursday night. The city chess championship is at stake. Dan earned a crack at the title when he won the Swiss type city tournament last Thursday, without a loss and only two draws in seven games against the strongest opponents in a field of 30 entries. This won him the Lansing Chess Club championship and the chance to meet the city champion, Frederic Foote, in the title match. He also won the city junior chess championship, as the highest-ranking player under age 19.

Another junior player, Lewis Hamilton of East Lansing, an M. S. U. freshman, was undefeated until he met Napoli in the final round. A loss then, and two previous draws, dropped him from top standings in the tournament RUNNERS-UP Second place was won by Ray Urbaniak, a Melling Forging company employe, with four wins, a draw with Hamilton and one loss to Napoli.

Third place went to John Kel will represent this country in Europe for the world championship. TOUCH OPPONENT Napoli, a quiet, serious-minded youth who studies books and current articles on chess, knows that Foote, the defending city champion, is one of Michigan's top tournament players, one who sometimes visits tournaments in other states and wins them or finishes near the top. When the world famous Log Cabin Chess club team from New Jersey visited Lansing last fall. Foote defeated their No. 1 player, H.

Hesse, who had recently won a national tournament. Foote hasn't lost a match game in the Lansing Chess club in upwards of a year. On the other hand, up-and-coming Nap rtuuVa T. Fontrr IVomftn't IWirf Corp. 7 wlH bbv publlr rar pftrtir 5 ftt P.
