City Press-Citizen RECORDS Saturday, December 27, 2003 Allen Roth, 80 Allen J. Roth, age 80, of 320 East Washington Street, Iowa City, died, December 25, 2003, Christmas morning, at his home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, December 28, 2003, at the First Mennonite Church in Iowa City with the Reverend Robert Smith officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m.

Allen John Roth was born September 24, 1923, in Shickley, Nebraska, the son of Daniel and Elsie (Birky) Roth.

He moved to Iowa City in 1942. On October 8, 1944, he married Minnie Lavina York in Iowa City. The couple made their home for over fiftyfour years at 2315 East Washington Street. For over twentyfive years, he worked as the head custodian at City High School. Allen and Minnie were very active members of the Bethany Baptist Church, he was a longtime scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop No.

200 of Iowa City, and Allen enjoyed the outdoors, camping, gardening, and Blue Grass festivals. He always enjoyed playing a good game of chess, even in his later years was up for the challenge, and he spent many hours volunteering at the senior center. His family includes two daughters, Judy Martin of Little Rock, Arkansas, and Sharon and her husband, Phillip, Piper of Angelton, Texas; two sons and their wives, Steven C. Roth Sr. Lois of Washington, Iowa, and Larry Roth and Bonnie of Marion, Iowa; 11 grandchildren, Scott Hardwick, Clint Hardwick, Jill Crews, Marti Davidson, Andy Piper, Dori Lee Reaska, Lisa Reardanz, Steven C.

Roth Tom DeSotel, Lisa Johnson, and Tara Neal; 24 great-grandchildren; sister, Leona Winterlin; 2 brothers and their wives, Merle and Alice Roth of Loveland, CO, and Eldon and Becky Roth of Elk Grove Village, IL; sisters-in-law, Mary Noel of Iowa City and Ramona Roth of Iowa City; and a brother-in-law, Jim York of Iowa City. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Minnie, in 1999, granddaughter, Jennifer Hardwick, sister, Viola Wilkens, two brothers, Roy and Ivan Roth, and son-in-law, Frank Martin. Gay Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service of Iowa City is caring for Allen's family and his services. Linda Roberts, 57 Linda Ruth Heitman Roberts, 57, of Anchorage, Alaska, formerly of Marengo, died Monday, Dec. 22, 2003, at her home from complications of cancer.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, with George Grothman officiating. Irs. Roberts was born Feb. 6, 1946, in Williamsburg, to Ralph and Alma Weisskopf Heitman.

She attended Williamsburg High School. She married John Hotz on Feb. 4, 1967. The couple later divorced. She married Dennis Roberts on Jan.

6, 1996. She moved to Klamath Falls, in 1979 and later moved to Anchorage. Survivors include three sons, John Hotz of Oxford, Jeff Hotz of Anchorage, and James Heitman of Klamath Falls; a daughter, Lorianna Hotz of White City, four grandchildren; her mother; two brothers, Raymond and Wayne Heitman, both of Marengo; and five sisters, Joan Hunt of Blakesburg, Zelda Sherman of Ely, Alice White of Ankeny, Karen Bischof of Middle Amana and Phyllis Bjork of Williamsburg. Her father; a brother, John Heitman; and her husband died earlier. Helen Helen West Des Indianola from this December Ney, 67 Kathryn Ney, 67, of Moines, formerly of and Iowa City, passed life on Thursday, 25, 2003, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston of cancer.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, December 29, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Ney in West Des Moines. Burial will take place at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines. Helen was born the daughter of Arthur P. and Lillian T.

Dye Brand on February 3, 1936, in Spring Hill, Iowa. She had lived in Spring Hill, Indianola, Iowa City, Dubuque, and Davenport before moving to Des Moines, 27 years ago. While in Des Moines, she was formerly employed as a library assistant at Dowling High School, Park Avenue Elementary School and Roosevelt High School. Helen was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and the Iowa Hawkeyes.

She enjoyed reading, traveling, bird watching and caring for her garden. Helen is survived and lovingly remembered by her two daughters, Mary Rasmussen and her husband, David, of Iowa City and Nicole Ney Morelock of West Des Moines; her two sons, Anthony Ney of West Des Moines and Stephen Black and his wife, Melody, of Henderson, Nevada; two grandchildren, Sophie and William Rasmussen; and a sister, Mary Jeanne Minor of Flagstaff, Ariz. Helen was preceded into eternal life by her husband, James N. Ney, on November 23, 2002; a daughter, Kathryn Susan Black; and a grandson, Justin Michael Morelock. A visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m., on Sunday, December 28, at Westover Funeral Home, in Des Moines, where a parish Vigil Service will begin at 3 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to either: The American Cancer Society, Mercy Hospice of Johnston, or Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Mary Yutzy, 88 Mary Edna Yutzy, 88, of Goshen, died of a lingering illness on Friday, Dec. 26, 2003, at Goshen General Hospital. A celebration of life service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec.

30, at Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona with Bishop William Yoder of Salem Mennonite Church, New Paris, officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 29, at Peterseim Funeral Home. Burial will be in Memory Gardens in Iowa City.

Yutzy was born March 23, 1915, to Benjamin and Katie (Thomas) Borntrager in Dodge City, Kan. She married Herman Yutzy on Nov. 4, 1941. She was a homemaker and a member of Salem Mennonite Church in New Paris, Ind. Survivors include one daughter and her husband, Shirley and Terry Gilbert of Goshen; two grandsons; three great-grandchildren; siblings Ida and Ralph Johnson of LaGrange, Elisabeth and John Helmuth of Topeka, Clara Kuhns of Goshen, Edna Mae and Freeman Miller of Topeka, and Esther Anna and Don Galloway of Ligonier, Ind.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Herman (December 21, 1974); three brothers, Mart, Dan and Joseph Borntrager; one sister, Polly Fry; and a stepsister, Malinda Ross. Paul Emerson, 72 Paul D. Emerson, 72, of 911 North Dodge Street, died Wednesday, December 24, 2003, at 1 Mercy Hospital of cancer. He married Reta Vrchoticky on June 1, 1949, at St. Wenceslaus Church in Iowa City. He was a 1949 graduate of Martinsdale High School in Martinsdale, Iowa. Paul owned and operated Emerson Masonry for many years. He was a self-taught mason and was most st content when he was laying brick and.

assisting family and friends with their projects. His masonry work on buildings and homes in Johnson County are his landmarks. He also did the masonry work at a hospital in Florida. Paul had received an award from the Iowa City Community School District for his guidance and knowledge in assisting with the Student Home Construction Program. His memberships included St.

Mary's Catholic Church, the Iowa City Homebuilders Association and he was a past member of the Moose and Eagle Lodges. Paul had a strong work ethic and enjoyed fishing, hunting, mushrooming and feeding the birds and deer. He was happiest when surrounded by family and friends and enjoyed making people laugh. He is survived by his wife, Reta; five children: Richard Emerson and his wife, Carolyn, Catherine Greazel and her husband, Francis, Susan Richerson and her husband, Michael, Kirk Emerson and his wife, Pamela, all of Iowa City, and Stephen Emerson and his wife, Pamela, of Hills; 16 grandchildren: Christine, Kenny, Dennis, Nathan and his wife, Roxanne, and her husband, Matthew, Christopher and his wife, Megan, Anthony, Elizabeth, Kimberly and her husband, Matthew, Chad and his wife, Deanna, Michael Todd, Micahla, Andrew, Brandon, Danielle and her husband, Dan, and Shanna; 11 greatgrandchildren; Zack, Casey, Derek, Lindsay, Peyton, Abby, Zack, Madelyn, Mollimarie, Jaxon, and one expectant greatgrandchild, Gus; two sisters: Rose McNeer and her husband, Robert, of Newton and Marjorie Singer and her husband, Robert, of Wilson, North Carolina; two sisters-in-law: Hazel Yoder Wenman and her husband, Arthur, of Riverside and Dorothy Hightshoe of Mt. Carmel, Illinois.

Frank was born in Alliance, Nebraska, to Francis J. and Anna Fay Connors on February 24, 1922. He graduated from St. Patrick's School in Cedar Rapids in 1941. He moved to Perry in 1945 and was united in marriage to Anita Quaid in Cedar Rapids on September 3rd of that year.

Frank was employed by the Milwaukee Railroad as an engineer and was a veteran of WWII. His memberships included: St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, American Legion, Past President of the Perry Little League Association, Past Chairman of the BLE, volunteer for Special Olympics, and served on the Perry Parks Board for many years. Preceding Frank in death were his parents, one sister and one grandchild. Survivors include his wife, Anita Connors of Perry; his sons, Tom Connors of Omaha, Nebraska, Joe Connors of Bettendorf, Iowa, Mick Connors of Holmen, Wisconsin, and Pat Connors of Oshkosh, Wisconsin; his daughters, Terri Lewis of Iowa City, Iowa, Kathleen Scott of Omaha, Nebraska, Maureen West of Phoenix, Arizona, and Ann Connors-Fesenmeyer of Iowa City, Iowa; 19 grandchildren sow and two great-grandchildren.

He graduated from Washington High School and Washington Junior College. He married Mildred Clara Heinold on June 14, 1942, in Washington and Louise Porter Fields on Jan. 1, 1978, in Washington. He owned McFarlane Insurance Agency for many years, retiring in 1985. Survivors include his wife, Louise; a son, Robert Neil McFarlane of Iowa City; a daughter, Paula Jean Stocks of Richland; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a stepdaughter, Nancy Welch of Wascott, two stepsons, Eugene Fields of Riverside and John Fields of Cedar Rapids; five stepgrandchildren; and three step great-grandchildren.

She worked for many years as a custodian for the University of Iowa. Survivors include her daughter, Virginia Brenneman of Oxford; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; one great grandchild; three sisters, Fern Wretling of Garrison, Ivas Carlson of Garrison and Helen Dittus of Minot, N.D.; and one brother, Robert Retterath of Garrison. Her husband; one daughter, Lois Duffy; two great-granddaughters; and by two sisters, Inez and Marion, died earlier.
