The Navasota Tablet received seven, the lightest weighing and the heaviest 41 pounds, making 2401 pounds in all. JSfehhcr of these papers Says anything of the value of melons as a steady diet, The Tyler says: The annual review of tho trade and commerce of Galveston, which was published by the NEWS, presents an encouraging fact for Gulf City. Free Prest reassures its readers during the ides of September by purading the statistics of and opesfl with Very naturally the month of September has become to be dreaded on the Texas coast. Of all others it has proved proiifii; of destructive storms. Corpus Christ! hna some experience in 1874. A. fearful storm raped from Friday, September Clh, 10 p.

The Stat; Gazette thinis that the re- ignation of Land Commissioner Groo3 demanded by the facts connected ilh the land-grab and the weight of ublic opinion. That paper says, but what authority does not appear, hat if "the Germans of Texas, and specially those Democrats who were romincnt in putting Groos forward as true representative man of their nationality, will proofed ot onci! to obtain expressions on the subject from influential sources of their own people, and then invite Mr. Groos to resign the office, they would be ia a position to the Galvditn KEWB did r.ot come, was Guutlon; but the people connok-d tljemMlvca when they remembered that tiic be outM time Friday morning, all the latest news. The Rttjijttr ia informed, that, thongh speaking in a jocular way, tbe was cot jolting in regard to the importance of tho oyster trade, and tbe floe field open on the coast Texas for the culture of the crop.

The oystev interest is one of the most important of the local inda.st.-ien of the oily of Baltimore, where tho trade absorbs hundreds of thousands of dollars in capital, and gives employment to thousands of people. In Kew York, according to the Herald, the annual tiansactioas of the city alone, in oysters, average and have been bteadily increasing after year. There' arc several hundred vessels, ranging from five to fifty tons burden, engaged in the neighboring waters in the fishery, and many thousand people 2nd profltablo employment in the various branches of the tra21c. There arc- some expectations of a foreign demand, and merchants considei that if beef can bo transported across the Atlantic and laid down in English and French cities in fresh condiilon, the same can be cffec'-ed with oysters. The development and discussion of the land grab continues to cause trouble of the most serious character, not only among such political champions as Ireland, Hubbard, Coke, et but also among politicians and editors who are not so prominent.

The New Braunfels Xcituvg has become a kind of German Gaudalupe Times, so voluminous and venomous are its personal attacks, al'. of which has grown out ot the- discussion of tho Land OQce indiscretion. In the lirst placo, thero is a communication of a column and a half in small type from William Hillert, who attacks Judge Siemering personally for his failure to discover a satisfactory number of mitigating circumstances the oflcial conduct of Herr Groos. In the Freie Pretse of tne Oth the public-spirited effusion of Mr, Hillert and Mr. Elllert himself are subjected to criticism, that appears likely to have a discouraging effect on his prospective journalistic Hillert is an engineer, and evidently inclined to side with Groos.

The cordial relations heretofore isting between the Land Commissioner and the organ of his own town have boen ruthlessly severed. Groos has heartlessly ordered his copy of the Zei- tuny stopped, and coupled the injury with the brutal remark that he had no further use for it. The language of tho editor on this piece of black ingratitude is of the most vigorous character, and there is a good deal of it besidec. He Auction. We have often Bali that of ali unthankful occupatlonc that of editing a newspaper is tho most so. Some people appear to think that whenever anything appears in the paper which they can't understand, or which displeases tliem, they have right to wipe their feet oa tte editor, or' to abuse him on general principles. This ia the Bad experience of every editor, without regard to the size or influence of his journal. But every editor has a soul of, his own gets accustomed to this discouraging condition of things.

There is another class, however, who have use for a newspaper just so long as the paper advocates their peculiar views no longer, just aa if the newspaper was gotten up for them and nobody and without remuneration either. The editor, of course, is to feel tickled besides at his chances of shouldering the responsibility. They seem to think tho editor is their laoltey, who is to'bo continually expressing his satisfaction at having to do all kinds of dirty work. If that class of customers and patrons only knew how absurd and contemptible they appeared when they ordered their paper stopped, as Groos has done, they would "look before they lesped." Having thus got his artillery in position, loaded and primed, and having secured the proper range, the Zsitu-ng sends a thirteen-icch shell right into the immediato vicinity of the be Icaguered Land Commissioner, thus: We believe we have proved to the satisfaction of all persons Mi-. r- 1U, 4 5, 674 417. J. H. ELSWORTH CO. scfttfurm IVES ID, AND DISCHARGING, 8VOO timates tte amount of money or deposit in Uae sayings banks of the country at fifteen -imtdred mil- liona dollars, ii name a successor for appointment by tho Governor who would do honor our German-American citizens.

The Stale Gazette, announces in flttin terms the death, at of Pro: Conrad C. Stremsae, in his seyeat; first year: Prof. Stremme was a man of soliil a as varied attainments, and of gren worth. He was many years ago one tho faculty of the University oE Hano ver, native country, and later wa sent for by Nicholas of Russia to flllaa important professorship in University Dorpat. Many years ago he left Dor Dat for where ho has sinco re sided.

In this Stato, after having bee employed on tho boundary commissio Lieutenant (QOW Qeceral) Mict er, ho filled for somo twelve years apo 3ition in our General Land Office. He was the architect who planned thai juildiag, and in the estimation ol ravelers it has long been held cae of be substantial ornaments of our State apital. The Csstroville Bra has a new plaa or populating the. country with the men of cities. That is, to fil! Ue cities with convict laborers, and ompei the honest working men to seek he country or starve.

The city work- rs will be like the maa who lost the pples, when they come to express their ondemcation of such a scheme. Tho Wilson County Chronicle says: The land grab has proved a bonanza Dick Hubbard's popularity. Just ow he could beat any nxan ia the State Governor. This is but another indication of the clous habit of considering public easures more with reference to their bearing on the prospects of individuals than by their connection with the real that ia this land nwindle we have always been on 'oos'a side, and we have placed our columns ftt the disposal of lias no further use for our paper. The "with counterfeited glee," predicts that it will not be long before the editor will have to bej, or run for or adopt some other disgraceful mode of earning a living, instead of editing a paper in New Eraunfels, in consequence of the withdrawal of Groos from the subscription list.

The Ztitung expresses some curiosity as to the course of the Commissioner, but suspects an inadvertant remark that he did not know what was going on in his own office had something to do with it. Thus drawing strength from its weakness the Zeiiuny man refers to the Land OGce aiTair as "a swill cart," on which he declines to pull any longer, and burning his ships behind him, he goes on to prove that Groos is responsible for the Chicago delinquencies of the. missing clerk Jackson. Still, brooding over his wrongs, tho editor goes for patrons a la Groos with renewed vigor, like several roung giants refreshed with new wine, and finding the German language utj erly inadequate to tho crisis, winds up with the following kindly advics ic English to Groos and hia sort of sup orters of an unbribed press, which we jive verbatim: "Go to h--1 and bfl d--d."
