On his way to Vienna he was captured by the Nazis and sent to a forced labor camp, where he was detained for a year until his liberation by Allied forces. His book Had Nowhere to Go is a diary of his experiences during and after World War II. After a brief stay in Germany, during which he received an education in philosophy at the University of Mainz, Mekas emigrated to America.

He has lived in New York since 1949. The Spriestersbach Lecture honors Bette R. Spriestersbach, former program associate in the Child, Health Specialty Clinics in the UI Hospital School and wife of former UI vice, president Duane C. Spriestersbach. The lecture series was endowed in 1992 by Duane Spriestersbach through a gift to the University of Iowa Foundation.

Spriestersbach Lecture at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at i the University of Iowa Museum lofArt. 1 Mekas' talk, "Language, (Dialects, Cinema and History," will trace the history and philosophy of the avant-garde in the arts. Mekas says his talk also will be about the "fragments of par-ladise that we should all protect." In addition to the lecture, Mekas' visit to the UI campus will be the occasion several public events.

Several of his films will be shown Sunday in Room 101 of I the Becker Communication Stud-1 ies Building. Notes on the Circus land Scenes from the Life of Andy Warhol will be shown starting at p.m., with an introduction by Mekas, and Reminiscences of a Journey to Lithuania will be shown at 7:30 p.m., followed by a discussion. Mekas will present a lecture, "Is There a Crisis in the Arts?" 1 at 8 p.m. Monday in Room 109 of the UI Art Building. On Tuesday, he will present a screening and discussion of a film he currently is working on, Re membering Hans Richter, at 10:30 a.m.

in Room 109 of the Art Building. All events are free. Mekas' films, which he envisions as a kind of memoir, take their subjects from his own life and the lives of his friends and associates. Unlike most films, he says, his works "are real life. In real life, you do not have themes." Mekas was the inaugural film critic for the Village Voice, a position he had for 18 years.

In 1970, he began to turn his energies toward the Anthology Film Archives in New York, a museum dedicated to preserving avant-garde films. The archive, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, has become Mekas' primary endeavor. There is No Ithaca, a collection of Mekas' poems translated from the original Lithuanian by poet Vyt Bakaitis, is forthcoming from Black Thistle Press in New York. As its title implies, the book is oddyssean in theme, combining poems about Mekas' village of origin with poems of exile.
