DOGS White female spaniel mix, By The Associated Press TOKYO Thousands of police in gas masks raided offices of a secretive religious group on Wednesday, two days after a nerve-gas attack on Tokyo's subway system killed eight people. At one site, an officer carried a canary, apparently hoping that any toxic fumes would kill it first and warn police. Police faced some resistance as they started to enter the Aum Shinri Kyo's five-story headquarters building at about 6:15 a.m.

in a quiet neighborhood of Tokyo. Some of those inside the building attempted to push police back, but no shooting was seen. It wasn't immediately clear FROM PAGE 1 Glickman opposes farm spending cuts The FBI looked into 105 overdrafts on the now-defunct House Bank, $1,050 worth of unpaid District of Columbia parking tickets that he took care of with two checks and personal charges on a credit card from his congressional campaign. The incidents occurred more than three years ago. And Lugar said his two-hour review of Clickman's background investigation showed that all ethical questions had been resolved.

But he added, "Because of the problems of your predecessor, you will be under a microscope." Espy was forced to resign after receiving favors from Tyson Foods Inc. and other companies doing business with the department and for making personal use of government travel. The committee's questions then turned to details of farm policy, an overhaul of the department, the farm budget and Glickman's vote against a global trade agreement that is supposed to benefit U.S. agriculture. Pledging to be an "advocate for agriculture," the Wichita native and former member of the House Agriculture Committee said he would oppose the kind of farm spending cuts being offered by Lugar.

Farm spending is automatically being cut through a decade's worth of farm bills and budget balancing legislation, he said. And agriculture has become TUESDAY'S DRAWINGS DAILY PICK 3 1-8-7 LOTTERY SCENE Call Journal Line 825-6OOO Category 4866 505 West Cloud; white and black female Dalmation, Broadway and Crawford; black and white neutered male Labrador mix, 600 block of Steahlin; white and brown male puppy pointer mix, 400 block of West Cloud; tan female greyhound 2000 block of North Halstead. how the raid on the group led by Shoko Asahara was related to the subway terror. The group, previously accused of making the type of gas used in the attack Monday, has denied involvement. Police said they launched the raid as part of an investigation into the abduction of a public official last month.

In the attack Monday, the poi son gas identified by police as sarin was released simultaneously in several downtown Tokyo subway stations, including the one under the heart of Japan's government. About 700 people remained hospitalized, 75 of them in critical condition. stable after the 1980s farm recession. He argued for reforming traditional farm programs, when necessary, rather than a complete overhaul. "We would be disturbing that stability if we made substantial cuts," Glickman said.

Lugar, a Republican presidential hopeful, has proposed $15 billion in spending cuts over five years by lowering major crop subsidies and eliminating a popular export subsidy program. Though he offered no specifics on the administration farm bill proposals, Glickman said the five- year legislation should "empower farmers, not encumber them." Glickman told the committee the administration would come up with farm bill proposals by the end of April. He acknowledged that work had been delayed by the lack of an agriculture secretary. Glickman promised less government interference in farmers' decision-making and more common sense in such conservation issues as determining what is a wetland. "Protecting the American workers' salary should be given as much importance as protecting a salamander," he said.

Explaining his vote in November against the newest accord under the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, Glickman said he had a moral obligation to carry out a campaign promise, even though the vote occurred after his election defeat. He said he intended to "implement vigorously" both GATT and the North American Free Trade Agreement. FROM PAGE 1 Four killed in attack at New Jersey post office train and saw police with weapons drawn near the post office. He said he watched as police knocked down the post office door around 5:15 p.m. A few minutes later, he said, about 10 people left the post office or an adjacent doorway and were rushed down the street by authorities.

He said one wounded man was brought out on a stretcher about a half-hour later, carried to a nearby playground, then evacuated by helicopter. A relative of the wounded man, David Grossman, said he might have stopped by for stamps or to pick up mail from a postal box. "He's got nothing to do with the post office," Alison Cross, Grossman's sister-in-law, said from her Los Angeles home. Grossman was "somewhat alert" when he was brought in, said Rogers Ramsey, a spokesman for University Hospital in Newark. fr-FROM PAGE 1 He was in critical condition with two gunshot wounds to the head.

"It's such an awful time when you don't even know if someone's going to live or die," said Cross, a screenwriter and former reporter. "You can't get any information. It's so awful." She said Grossman, 45, and his wife, Karin Abarbanel, have a 4- year-old son. Bill Murphy, 25, an employee at Watchung Booksellers a few stores down from the post office, said he heard what may have been three shots. "I thought it was a car backfiring.

Then someone came in and told us what happened," he said. A crowd quickly gathered on the street as word spread. Some townspeople, a few with their dogs on leashes, watched as police with metal detectors and dogs went door-to-door searching for leads. Police set up a command post Tuesday night in the shopping center's color lab. The four-block square contains nearly 50 businesses, including several restaurants.

Views mixed on outlook for prices of farmland The subsidy issue arose last week when state wheat growers association president Vance Ehmke testified before the Senate Agriculture Committee and said land values would decline with cuts in farm payments. Real estate agent Steve Burr said Kansas State University agricultural economist Barry Flinchbaugh predicted land prices would sink as they did in the early 1980s. "It was as precipitous as hell," he said of the dive. It's a different story today. Fel- low Realtor Jerry Knowles said it's a sellers' market.

"Land is so scarce. In our area there isn't that much available," said Knowles, who added that prices have doubled in the past four years. Whatever the farm-subsidy outcome, Shuttleworth said the future picture of agriculture will contain fewer faces. "There will be less producers and larger he said, referring to bigger machinery needed to farm more acreage. "In the next five years there will be 15 percent fewer farm families than there are today.

That's 15 percent fewer who will buy our products." rv Memory of Richard H. (Dick) Pickering The Cozy Inn Will be closed all day Wednesday, March 22 tr-.
