The state had seen few men with the political color of the 52-year-old Bigler. A former Democrat, he won nomination on the Republican ticket in June by a 50,000 plurality after a four-way battle so bitter at times that it threatened to spUt the party. When a water tank exploded November 13 in a consolidated school at Baroda, Mich, the lives of 260 chil dren were endangered.
