2C Iowa City Press-Citizen Tuesday, October 13, 1987 NEWS OF RECORD DEATHS Berg Services for Gladys Berg will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Barker Funeral Home in West Branch, with burial at West Branch Cemetery. The Rev. James Fouke will officiate. Mrs.

Berg, 74, of West Branch, died Monday at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City after a short illness. Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. today at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established. She was born June 15, 1913, in Iron River, daughter of George and Elva Martell.

She married Roy Berg Oct. 4, 1932. She was a nursing assistant at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City for 15 years, retiring in 1978. She is survived by five sons, Gil of Maquoketa, Roy of Oxford, Harry of Yucaipa, Clarence of Kalona and Tom of Ottumwa; two sisters, Dorothy Carney of West Branch and Evelyn Beaver of West Liberty; a brother, Leslie Martell of Iron River; two sisters, Margiore Tutor of Iron River and Lilly osh of Livermore, several grandchildren; and several greatgrandchildren. Four brothers and a grandson died earlier.

Frye Marie H. Frye, 93, of 320 E. Washington died 1 Monday at Mercy Hospital. Services are pending at the George L. Gay Funeral Home.

Leaverton Cynthia L. Leaverton, 34, 618 S. Van Buren died Sunday at her home after a short illness. Services are pending at the George L. Gay Funeral Home.

Travis Dr. Lee Edward Travis, 91, former professor and head of the department of psychology at the University of Iowa, died Saturday at his home in Encino, Calif. Services will begin 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Bel Air Presbyterian Church in Bel Air, Calif. Professor Travis was born June 23, 1896, on a farm in Chase County, Neb.

He first attended Graceland College in Lamoni and received his bachelor's in 1922, his master's in 1923 and his doctorate in 1924 from the UI. From 1924 through 1927 he held a National Research Council Fellowship, for which he was selected to prepare and develop a program of research in the causes and treatment of speech and reading disorders, as well as psychological and behavioral disorders. During one of these years he studied in England, Germany and the Netherlands. In 1927 he was appointed associate professor of psychology, becoming a full professor in 1928. Beginning in 1927, Travis began a variety of innovative programs at the university, all of them based in the department of psychology but making contributions to many other areas.

Most notable of these was the one that became the present department of speech pathology and audiology. He was director of the university's first Psychological Clinic. His interests and scholarship in the area of behavioral neurophysiology led to the establishment, by one of his students, of the present Laboratories of Clinical Neurophysiology in the department of neurology at University Hospitals. In 1937 he was appointed director of the Psychological Laboratories and head of the department of psychology. In 1938, he left Iowa to assume a professorship at the University of Southern California, from which he retired in 1964.

In 1965 he was appointed dean and professor of psychology at the Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, Calif. Although retired, he continued to be active IOWA lowa Tonight, Increasing cloudiness. A slight chance of showers after midnight. Low 45 to 50. South wind around 10 mph.

The outlook for Oct. 18-22 calls for above normal temperatures and precipitation. Monday evening's 4-inch soil temperatures ranged from the middle 40s over the northeast to the lower 60s in the south.

During his tenure at the UI, Professor Travis directed the research of 46 successful doctoral candidates, wrote more than 100 scientific publications and wrote the definitive book, Speech Pathology. He introduced the term "speech pathology" into scientific literature. He is survived by his wife, Lisa; three sons, Paul, Duane and Knight, all of Los Angeles; and by his many graduate students.
